Fiery pipes

PORT ANGELES — Celtic music will fill up the Little Theater at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., tonight as The Fire Inside band brings in its pipes, voices, drum and strings.

The 7 p.m. concert is presented by St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, with tickets at $10. Those can be purchased at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St., or at St. Andrew’s, 510 E. Park Ave.

Earthquake education

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., in conjunction with National Marine Sanctuaries and Earthscope, will present an evening of earthquake education from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

The free event is open to the public.

Brian Atwater will present the discoveries made in validating a 1700s earthquake and what is now being called the Orphan Tsunami of 1700.

Brynne Walker will discuss ways to prepare for an earthquake.

Jamie Valadez will recount a local Native American flood legend, and Bella Voce will sing an earth song.

Wacky Dodge Ball

PORT ANGELES — United Way of Clallam County will host Wacky Olympics Dodge Ball at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., at 6 p.m. today.

The dodgeball tournament uses Nerf-style balls and is for all ages.

Admission is free for spectators.

The entry cost is $100 per team or $10 per person for “free agent” players.

‘Lunch in Garden’

PORT ANGELES — Home gardeners will meet at the Fifth Street Community Garden, 328 E. Fifth St., for advice from local experts about vegetable gardening from noon to 1 p.m. today.

Veteran Master Gardeners Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton, Audreen Williams and Jeanette Stehr-Green will talk about cool-weather crops, prevention of carrot rust fly and cabbage butterfly damage, building trellises and planting strawberries and blueberries.

School open house

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Christian School will hold an open house and family night at 43 O’Brien Road, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

The parent-teacher group will offer hot dogs and hamburgers, and classrooms will be open for visits.

Teachers will be available to answer questions.

The playground will have supervision available with games for the children to play so parents can tour the school.

Builders’ surplus

PORT ANGELES — The North Peninsula Building Association will host its annual Builders’ Surplus Sale at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

A large selection of new and used building materials and home improvement supplies will be on hand, along with discounted service certificates for landscaping materials.

The association welcomes donations from the public of salable items.

Roller derby car wash

PORT ANGELES — The Port Scandalous Roller Derby women will hold a car wash at Les Schwab Tire Center, 2527 E. U.S. Highway 101, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Washes are by donation.

Funds raised go toward the roller derby league, which is a nonprofit group, and help pay for practice space, insurance, gear and more.

Coin club meeting

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Coin Club will meet in the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody, at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The public is welcome to attend to learn about collecting and evaluating coins and currency.

Zen retreat day

PORT ANGELES — North Olympic Sangha, a Zen community, will hold a by-donation Zazenkai (a one-day Zen retreat) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Alternated zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation) and private, individual instruction with the Zen master are available.

Silent coffee/tea breaks and a simple soup and bread lunch will be offered.

At 10 a.m., there will be a chanting service. At 1 p.m., a Zen master will present a talk.

Donations to offset the costs will be accepted.

Spruce Railroad walk

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Peninsula Explorers will host a walk on the Spruce Railroad trail near Lake Crescent at 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

Walkers will meet at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, for the 6K/12K (3.5-mile/7.5-mile) walk.

All walkers must sign up before 9 a.m.

The walk is free except for those who want to receive credit from the American Volkssporter Association.

The trail offers a gentle stroll with views along Lake Crescent’s north shore, mostly following the old abandoned railroad grade and skirting two tunnels that are dangerous to enter.

No pets are allowed. Restrooms are at the trailhead and at Log Cabin Resort.

Maps of the trail will be handed out at the sign-up.

Golf tournament

SEQUIM — The 24th annual Sequim Boys & Girls Club Golf Tournament is today.

The four-person scramble will be at the Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Tee times start at 1 p.m. Other festivities are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Entry fees are $100 per person and include green fees, cart, practice range, commemorative hat, lunch and a player goodie bag.

Proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, which serve Sequim and Port Angeles.

Library book sale set

SEQUIM — The Friends of Sequim Library group will hold their monthly book sale at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Of special interest this month is a collection of 80 golf books, ghost and haunted building stories from all over the U.S., vintage paperback Westerns, fishing and gardening books.

Proceeds from the sale are used to fund children’s and adult programs at the library.

Old Time jam

SEQUIM — The Washington Old Time Fiddler Association will meet at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, for a jam at 11 a.m., followed by a performance at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The performance is free and open to the public, with donations going to fiddler scholarships.

The group is a nonprofit organization supporting education and development of musicians.

Book discussion

SEQUIM — Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi will be discussed at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday.

SARC closure

SEQUIM — The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center will be closed Saturday and Sunday for pressure washing and other exterior maintenance.

Vehicles must be out of the parking lot of the center at 610 N. Fifth Ave. from 9 tonight through 5 a.m. Monday.

The pool at the center known as SARC is closed through May 25 for painting.

But the rest of the facility will be open during this time except for this weekend.

Annual passes will be honored at the William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles, during the SARC pool closure. Bring a SARC card or driver’s license.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’

PORT TOWNSEND — “The Little Shop of Horrors” will be performed tonight, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at Port Townsend High School.

The curtain will rise at 7 both nights, as well as at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, in the high school auditorium at 1500 Van Ness St.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students, $3 for children younger than 12 and $25 for families.

Tickets will be available at the door only. The box office opens one hour before the show.

“Little Shop of Horrors” also will be performed May 15 and 16 at 7 p.m.

‘TANSTAAFL’ wraps

PORT TOWNSEND — Key City Public Theatre’s original play “TANSTAAFL,” which stands for “There Ain’t No Such Thing as a Free Lunch,” has just three more performances to go before closing.

The tragicomic story about a down-and-out Northwest town and its would-be rescuer unfolds at 7:30 tonight and Saturday night and finally at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Key City Playhouse, 419 Washington St.

‘Old Times’ monologues

PORT TOWNSEND — The Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Theater Circle will present “Old Times: An Evening of Scenes, Monologues and Music” at 7 tonight and Saturday night.

The Meetinghouse Concerts are a series of benefit concerts to raise funds for a new kitchen for the meetinghouse.
