NEWS BRIEFS: KONP broadcaster on the mend after fall . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — Venerable KONP broadcaster Howard “Scooter” Chapman is recuperating from knee injuries suffered in a weekend fall at his home, the radio station said Monday.

Chapman, 80, who has broadcast on KONP for more than 50 years and is a sportscaster member of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame, will be away from radio duties for an undetermined time, station Manager Todd Ortloff said.

But he plans to do some on-air work via telephone, Ortloff added.

Chapman started as KONP sports director in 1961, when the radio station was owned by the Port Angeles Evening News, where he also was sports editor.

‘Young’ discussion

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Film Festival’s First Tuesday Salon is tonight at the Rose Theatre, 235 Taylor St., with “While We’re Young” slated for discussion.

Moviegoers are invited to join the conversation following the 7 p.m. screening of the comedy, which features Ben Stiller, Adam Driver and Naomi Watts.

“While We’re Young” gets into “what is so funny about peer pressure and our continued belief that someone else is much cooler than we are,” according to the festival’s invitation to tonight’s salon.

Pool closure slated

SEQUIM — The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center (SARC) aquatics area will be closed today through May 25 for painting work.

The rest of the facility will be open during this closure except for Saturday and Sunday during the Sequim Irrigation Festival when SARC attendance is expected to be low, according to a news release.

At that time, staff will perform exterior maintenance, including pressure washing.

Vehicles need to be removed from the SARC parking lot from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, May 11.

The facility will be open earlier in the day Dec. 24 to make up for this closure.

Annual passes will be honored at the William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles, during the SARC pool closure.

Studium Generale to welcome author for lecture on Thursday

PORT ANGELES — Studium Generale will host Mike Hiestand, former attorney for the Student Press Law Center and a published author, editor and teacher, in the Little Theater at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., at 12:35 p.m. Thursday.

Hiestand organized “The Tinker Tour” and traveled through 41 states and two foreign countries with Mary Beth Tinker, plaintiff in the 1969 Supreme Court case that bears her name, to discuss the importance of free speech and freedom of the press.

His visit to Peninsula College is part of the annual First Amendment Festival, created by Rich Riski. This is an opportunity for a round table of publishers to discuss how technology is impacting life, social spheres and business practices.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Prayer breakfast

PORT ANGELES — The 17th annual Community Prayer Breakfast will be held in the St. Anne Room at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Rev. Joe Gentzler of First Christian Church will be the guest speaker.

Special music will be provided by Dave and Linda Moffitt, with accompanist Gini McLennan.

Tickets for the full breakfast are $9 and are available at KONP radio, 721 E. Front St.; from Kiwanis members; and at the door Thursday.

SEQUIM — A quorum of the City Arts Advisory Commission will attend the Port Townsend Regional Arts Forum sponsored by the Washington State Arts Commission.

The forum, featuring Washington State Arts Commission Executive Director Karen Hanan, will be held today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the CoLab, 237 Taylor St. in Port Townsend, according to a news release.

Coffee with mayor

SEQUIM — The city’s “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues this month.

Sequim residents can meet informally with Mayor Candace Pratt on Thursdays, May 7 and 21, at 8:30 a.m. at Adagio Bean & Leaf, 981 E. Washington St.

The mayor will listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or community.

Grief support

PORT ANGELES — Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County is offering a six-week grief support group series from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Monday beginning May 11 and

ending June 15.

The group will meet at Hospice House, located behind the main office at 540 E. Eighth St.

The program is free and open to the public.

Heart health talk

PORT HADLOCK — “Heart Health: The Silent Killer: Elevated Blood Pressure” will be the topic of a talk at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., at 6 p.m. Thursday.
