NEWS BRIEFS: Aquatic group open forum slated today in Port Hadlock . . . and other items

PORT HADLOCK — Jefferson County Aquatic Coalition will hold a free informational forum at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

All are welcome.

This forum focuses on what the coalition is doing to fulfill its mission “to provide proactive leadership and advocacy to sustain a thriving public aquatic recreation facility that serves the needs of East Jefferson County now and in the future.”

Topics will include the Mountain View Pool, the evolving plans for a full service YMCA and the free Second Sunday Swims.

Spring concert set

SEQUIM — The Sequim High School Band’s Spring Concert will be held in the school auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave., at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The performance is free and open to the public.

The concert band, wind ensemble, percussion and jazz band bring an evening of music to the community.

Fourth Friday read

SEQUIM — Fourth Friday Readings will take place at Rainshadow Coffee, 157 W. Cedar St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

An entire evening of five-minute open mic readings showcase the diversity of writing talent on the Peninsula. Writers are invited to share poems, memoir excerpts and short-short stories.

Arrive at 6 p.m. to sign in for the readings. Readings begin at 6:30 p.m. sharp.

Names are drawn for reading position. It’s recommended that readers rehearse in advance as the readings are timed.

Meowgaritas, Mutts

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society has scheduled its third annual Meowgaritas and Mutts dinner and auction for Saturday, April 25, at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.

Seats are $50 per person and $400 for a table of eight.

The event features a Mexican dinner along with a silent and live auction.

Cocktails and the silent auction begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner following at 6:30 p.m.

In two years, the event has raised nearly $120,000. Proceeds from this year’s event will go to the Humane Society’s building fund for a new dog kennel facility on Old Olympic Highway between Port Angeles and Sequim.

The three modular buildings currently on the property will be used to house cats, administration and veterinary services; however, a dog kennel facility must be built before the organization can move to the new location.

Peninsula College students to be honored at ceremony in Olympia

PORT ANGELES — Morgan Carl and Stephen DeVoe have been named to the 2015 All-Washington Academic Team from Peninsula College.

They will be honored in a special ceremony Thursday at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.

The annual ceremony recognizes top scholars from community and technical colleges across the state. The award is given to students for scholastic achievement and service to their communities and colleges.

Carl, 28, was born and raised in Sequim. He began prerequisites for the nursing program at Peninsula College in the spring of 2014 and plans on entering the one at Peninsula College this fall.

DeVoe, 36, was born in Seattle and grew up in Woodinville. He completed degrees at Whatcom Community College and Western Washington University before joining the Peace Corps serving in Guinea, West Africa.

Afterward, he attended the University of Vermont to pursue a master’s degree in mental health counseling, which he is on track to complete this year.

DeVoe finished prerequisites for medical school at Peninsula College and is currently the Associated Student Council president.

He plans to apply to medical school after the completion of his master’s degree.

As members of the All-Washington Academic Team, both Carl and DeVoe will receive a $250 scholarship sponsored by KeyBank and will have the opportunity to receive other scholarship awards.
