NEWS BRIEFS — Port Angeles studio to host special art display this month . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — Randolf Frederick Co., the upstairs studio in The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Suite 211, is featuring a special display of the art of Joseph Fourbears.

The art is on display this month.

Fourbears, who grew up on the Omaha Reservation in Macy, Neb., has been an Army paratrooper, bartender, gold miner and commercial artist.

He calls his artwork “evolutionary,” as it continuously evolves.

Randolf Frederick Co.’s (360-797-1718) is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

It also has other art, original and hand-picked jewelry, gems and minerals, and watches, and does watch repair, including replacement of watch batteries.

No flight operations

COUPEVILLE — There will be no field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville today through Saturday.

Senior nutrition

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

The center will be closed Tuesday due to Veterans Day.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■ Wednesday: Pea salad, Swedish meatballs, egg noodles, baked tomato and peach cobbler.

■ Thursday: Green salad, baked chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and apricots.

■ Friday: Waldorf salad, baked ham, whipped potatoes, Brussels sprouts and spice carrot cake.

Fruit tasting set

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Orchard Society will host a fruit tasting in commissioners’ chambers at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Admission is free and open to the public.

There are dozens of apples and pears for tasting.

Artist league meet

PORT LUDLOW — The Port Ludlow Artists’ League will feature oil painter Jim Jacobson at its general meet Wednesday.

The meeting is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 121 Marina View Drive.

Jacobson, following a career in educational administration, has been “satisfying his thirst for fine art by taking up the brush and canvas,” according to a news release.

Guests are welcome to attend this monthly meeting and social time by paying a guest fee of $5.

Sea chantey circle

PORT TOWNSEND — A Sea Shanty Song Circle will be held at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The event is free, family-friendly and open to the public.

The Whateverly Brothers will lead the evening of singing.

Artist of the Month

PORT LUDLOW — An opening reception for Fran Bodman, the Port Ludlow Artists’ League November Artist of the Month, will be held at Sound Community Bank, 500 Oak Bay Road, at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The reception moves at 5 p.m. to the gallery next door, where refreshments will be served.

Self-taught, Bodman likes to work mostly in pastels and acrylics with a few variations in other media. She enjoys doing portraits and self-portraits.

Her work can be seen at the Port Ludlow Art Gallery and the Inn at Port Ludlow.

Soroptimists honor 2

SEQUIM — Soroptimist International of Sequim recently honored and congratulated Elise Beuke and Victoria Cummins as September and October Girls of the Month, respectively.

The senior girls, both co-captains of their basketball team, along with some members of their families, were guests at the club’s Oct. 14 business meeting.

Beuke is the daughter of Mary Beth Beuke and Todd Beuke. Aside from challenging herself in AP classes at the high school, being involved in student government and participating in girls basketball, Beuke also volunteers through the Sequim Youth Basketball program as a coach, referee and clinic leader.

A rower with the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association in Port Angeles, Beuke will be rowing for the University of Washington next year.

Cummins is the daughter of Karin Cummins.

She is a second-year Running Start student, simultaneously earning high school and college credit.

Cummins looks forward to receiving an Associate of Arts from Peninsula College next spring.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, plays girls basketball for Sequim High and volunteers for the Sequim Youth Basketball program as a coach for third- and fourth-grade girls.

Her future plans include transferring to a four-year university in fall 2015.

Senior recognized

SEQUIM — Trevor Collins, a senior at Sequim High School, was recognized as Sequim Sunrise Rotary’s October Vocational Student of the Month.

Collins was nominated by his Sequim High teacher Mark Sabo for his “great attitude in class and aptitude with networking and Cisco network certification,” according to a news release.

Outside of school, Collins plans to attend college and further his knowledge in Cisco networking and IT.

He is the son of Melissa Sanford.

Fire official lauded for service years

SPOKANE — Clallam County Fire District No. 2 Commissioner Richard Ruud was honored recently by the Washington Fire Commissioners Association for his 60 years of service to the citizens of Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue.

Association Executive Director Roger Ferris called on Fire Chief Sam Phillips to begin the honors with an overview of Ruud’s accomplishments, after which Ruud was presented with a plaque from the fire district.

Ferris then presented Ruud with a specialized framed letter, congratulating him for his service as a firefighter, a chief fire officer and a fire commissioner.

Ruud joined Dry Creek Station in 1954. He has served in every position within the fire district, attaining in 1972 the rank of chief until 1982.

He was first elected commissioner for the district in 1980 and has held the position of board chair numerous times over the course of his 34 years as a commissioner. He remains active in district policy.

A native of Port Angeles, Ruud graduated from high school and then entered the U.S. Navy, after which he continued his education with two years of college.

He and his wife, Sally, enjoy traveling in their motor home with their dogs and visiting his cabin on Lake Sutherland.
