Genealogy meeting

PORT ANGELES — Methods for finding Native American ancestors will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Virginia Majewski’s presentation will be in the Port Angeles Library’s Raymond Carver Room, 2201 S. Peabody St., during the Clallam County Genealogical Society’s meeting.

It is recommended that participants arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to register, visit and have a cup of coffee.

Majewski is a certified genealogist who has been involved with professional research for several years.

She will tell about the different tribes, where the records are found and how to access them.

Roller derby meet-up

PORT ANGELES — Port Scandalous Roller Derby will hold an open meet-and-greet at Bella Rosa Coffee House, 403 S. Lincoln St., at 7 p.m. today.

PORT ANGELES — A Clallam County Garden/Plant Swap will be held at Fairview Bible Church, 385 O’Brien Road, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Admission is free.

There are no sales, just exchanges and freebies.

Traders will exchange expert gardening information as well as plant materials.

Attendees without plants to swap can bring cookies or chocolate.

Caregivers conference

PORT ANGELES — The eighth annual Building Your Caregiver’s Toolbox Conference, “Keeping a Healthy Balance,” will be at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The public is welcome.

The free event, co-sponsored by the Olympic Area Agency on Aging and the Port Angeles Senior Center, is for family and professional caregivers of community elders.

Keynote speaker Marty Richards will present “Keeping a Balance: Health, Hope and Heart.”

Morning presentations will include Jim Couture presenting “Maximizing Music in the Home,” as well as “Healthy Balance: A Taste of Classes” offered at the Port Angeles Senior Center.

The conference will feature more than two dozen organizations offering information about local services.

Complimentary lunches for caregivers will be provided by Park View Villas.

Paddlers club meet

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Paddlers have reserved William Shore Memorial Pool for two hours Sunday for kayak skills and safety practice.

Non-members are welcome, though space is limited.

The club also will meet at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The featured program is an August canoe/kayak trip on the Yukon River.

Free stories at OTA

SEQUIM — As an addition to Sequim’s Art Walk this evening, storyteller Phil Dominiak will reel off humorous tales for listeners of all ages in a free program at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave.

It’s called OFF Stage, short for ­Olympic Theatre Arts First Friday Stage, and it’ll start at 6 p.m. with no cover charge.

OTA’s wine bar will be open with wine for sale by the glass.

Dominiak plans to tell stories including “The Hollow,” a comic tale, “Catching Up,” about an old man and his friends; a feel-good story called “The Special Gift,” “A Glitch in the System,” about a school district, and finally “The Feather Pillow.”

Sequim’s First Friday Art Walk, meantime, spans a variety of downtown galleries and cafes from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Discussion group

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon today.

Cat adoption

SEQUIM — The Desperate Housecats Adoption Event, hosted by Pawsitive Alliance, is set at Petco, 1205 W. Washington St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Adoptable cats and kittens will be available. Four cat rescue agencies will be present.

Adoption fees vary but typically range between $75-$100.

All cats are up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered.

Explorers plan walk

SEQUIM — Walkers are invited to join the Olympic Peninsula Explorers on a walk at John Wayne Marina at 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

The group will leave at 9 a.m. from the QFC Store, 990-B E. Washington St. Participants can sign up inside at the far-right entrance.

The walk is a 7K (4-mile) or 12K (7.4-mile) hike along moderate hills and on well-groomed trails along country roads and the Discovery Trail through Carrie Blake Park.

The walk is free unless one wishes to have credit from the AVA.

The 12K walk will visit John Wayne Marina.

The 7K walk does not go down to the marina, thus avoiding any moderate hills.

The walk is suitable for strollers, and pets on a leash are OK.

Restrooms are at the start and along the way.

A lunch meeting will be at noon at Dynasty Restaurant, 380 E. Washington St.

Friends book sale

SEQUIM — The Friends of Sequim Library will hold their monthly book sale Saturday at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This month, all paperback fiction inside the building will be half-price.

In addition, a large collection of Reiki healing technique books are available.

There are also many books in all subject areas that are in gift-giving condition.

Second birding talk

SEQUIM — Christie Lassen of Wild Birds Unlimited will present the next program for the “Backyard Birding” series at the Dungeness River Audubon Center in Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The class is $5 for adults 18 and older.

The next class, “Birds: The Inside Story,” will be Jan. 10.

Accordion social set

SEQUIM — The Sequim Accordion Social will be at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Pancake breakfast

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Grange will host a pancake breakfast at the Grange Hall, 290 Macleay Road, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

The menu consists of pancakes, eggs and ham.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger.

The profits from the breakfast will be used for Grange Hall repairs and remodeling.

Outdoor Club hike

SEQUIM — The Olympic Outdoor Club will hike the Gray Wolf River Trail on Saturday and the Upper Dungeness River Trail on Sunday.

The Gray Wolf Trail is a moderately easy outing of 8.4 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 800 feet and a high point at 1,500 feet.

The Dungeness River Trail, which is 6.8 miles round trip, also is moderately easy with an elevation gain of 600 feet and a high point at 3,100 feet.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Historical Society First Friday Lecture tonight will feature local poet Finn Wilcox reading from his book Here Among the Sacrificed.

First Friday stories

PORT TOWNSEND — A free “Second Sunday” swim will take place at Mountain View Pool, 1919 Blaine St., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., it’s an adults-only session with lap swimming, water walking and deep-water exercise.

Jennings fundraiser

FORKS — The Forks Elks Lodge 2524, 941 Merchants Road, will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The dinner will raise funds for area resident Scott Jennings, who is awaiting a heart transplant.

Jennings grew up in Forks and graduated from Forks High School in 1989.

On March 28, he suffered a heart attack and underwent triple bypass surgery.

All proceeds from the dinner and auction will go to helping with medical bills.
