PORT ANGELES — This is no easy time for a lot of us.

A sorrow, a loss or a memory can follow you around at Christmastime, making it difficult to enjoy all the lights and carols.

So for the fifth consecutive year, the Blue Christmas service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., with the Rev. Gail Wheatley, pastor at St. Andrew’s, hosting the gathering at 7 p.m. Saturday, the night of the winter solstice.

“There are no questions asked. You don’t have to come back on Sunday. Nobody’s going to ask your name,” Wheatley said of the nondenominational service.

She extends a special invitation to those who may not feel so comfortable in church.

“There’s music, prayers, candlelight and quiet time,” Wheatley said.

The service lasts about an hour and will have Wheatley’s brief sermon.

In it, she’ll talk about how “we bring our most vulnerable selves . . . and ask God to shine a light on the dark places.”
