Ways of Whales Workshop set

COUPEVILLE — Orca Network’s annual Ways of the Whales Workshop is scheduled Saturday, Jan. 28.
The workshop will be from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Camp Casey Conference Center, 1276 Engle Road, Coupeville, Whidbey Island.
The cost of the workshop is $25.
Lunch is available for an additional $10 for those who preregister by Friday, Jan. 20.
The annual workshop explores the wonders of Pacific Northwest whales and orcas, the threats to their habitats and health, and the research being conducted.
Presentations
This year’s workshop will include presentations by:
■ Candice Emmons of the NOAA Fisheries Northwest Fisheries Science Center will tell of suction-cup tag research on Southern Resident orcas.
■ Jessica Lunden of the Center for Conservation Biology at the University of Washington will report on the orca scat project and detecting stress hormones in Southern Resident orcas.
■ Matt Krogh of the North Sound Baykeeper Team will tell of impacts and implications of the planned Gateway Pacific coal shipping terminal at Cherry Point.
■ William Wilcock of UW’s School of Oceanography will report on “fin whale seismology.”
■ Howard Garrett of the Orca Network will give a presentation on captive orcas.
Lunch will be meat or vegetarian spaghetti with garlic bread, vegetable, Caesar salad, fruit, apple crisp and beverage.
Snacks and beverages also will be available during the morning and afternoon breaks.
