True-crime ‘The Lady of the Lake’ now digital book

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Peninsula’s best-selling true-crime book, “The Lady of the Lake” by Mavis Amundson, is now available as a digital book from Amazon.com.

Consumers can download the digital edition from Amazon to the company’s Kindle readers for $2.99.

Paperback editions of the book are still available for $5.95 at various retailers in Port Angeles, Lake Crescent and Forks, including the Peninsula Daily News’ offices in Port Angeles, 305 W. First St.

The book by Amundson, a former reporter and features editor at the PDN, tells the story of Hallie Illingworth, who was murdered in 1937.

Her weighted body was wrapped in blankets and dumped in Lake Crescent.

Nearly three years later, her body floated to the surface, giving investigators the evidence they needed to bring her killer to justice.

The book was first published in 2000 by Western Gull Publishing, a division of the PDN.

It has since been reissued in several print editions.

Amundson is also the author of “The Great Forks Fire,” a book about the 1951 forest fire that almost claimed Forks, and “Sturdy Folk,” a collection of memoirs about life on the North Olympic Peninsula in the early 20th century.

All three books are for sale at the PDN’s office in Port Angeles and at local bookstores.
