SEQUIM — An 89-year-old Sequim man involved in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 101 east of Sequim on Sunday morning has died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Robert W. Husser was making a left turn in a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier onto the highway from Palo Alto Road when it was apparently struck by a 1993 GMC pickup truck driven by James I. Gertz, 78, of Port Angeles.

State Patrol troopers said Gertz was traveling eastbound when his truck crashed into Husser’s car at 9:42 a.m.

Husser was airlifted from the scene to the Seattle hospital with head injuries.

The State Patrol said Husser died of his injuries at 11:58 p.m. Sunday. His next of kin was with him at the hospital.

The state Department of Transportation closed the highway in both directions at 10:35 a.m. Sunday. It was reopened at 10:54 a.m., Transportation spokeswoman Kelly Stowe said.
