SEQUIM — A celebrated photographer who bolstered her husband’s prolific career as a nature writer and photographer was mourned Wednesday, one day after she died from injuries suffered in a four-vehicle collision.

Peggy Bauer, 72, co-authored and photographed 45 books with Erwin “Joe” Bauer, her husband of 33 years, before he died from cancer just over a month ago.

The tragedy was overwhelming to Parker Bauer, Joe’s son and Peggy’s stepson, who spoke to Peninsula Daily News by phone from his Florida home.

“When I first heard this, quite frankly, I didn’t believe it,” Parker Bauer said of his stepmother’s death.

What he learned afterward was more than just unbelievable — it was highly ironic.
