Shine: Fred Hill demonstrates Hood Canal Bridge barge traffic for “pit to pier” project

SHINE — A barge 240 feet long and 60 feet wide traveled under the eastern span of the Hood Canal Bridge on a sunny and calm Wednesday afternoon.

Making its way quickly through the water at 5 knots, its sound was mostly drowned out by vehicle traffic passing overhead.

Expect approximately five barges to make this trip a day if a “pit to pier” gravel project goes forward, Fred Hill Materials officials said Wednesday.

The Poulsbo-based company put on a demonstration — opponents called it a public relations maneuver — showing how an “average” barge would make its way under the bridge to the company’s proposed pier near Shine.

An application for the “pit-to-pier” project has yet to be submitted.

The demonstration Wednesday didn’t require the floating drawbridge to be opened.
