Peninsula: Race emerges for 24th District legislative seat

One race has emerged so far in the state’s 24th Legislative District, which includes Clallam and Jefferson counties and part of Grays Harbor County.
Former Sequim Mayor Bill Thomas, a Democrat, filed this week to oppose incumbent Joyce Republican Jim Buck for the 24th District Position 1 seat in the state House.
Buck also filed for re-election to what would be his fifth term.
In 2000, Buck won re-election defeating Pat Slaten of Port Angeles with a margin of victory of 61.3 percent to 38.7 percent.
Lynn Kessler, D-Hoquiam, filed for re-election to her Position 2 seat in the 24th District.
She is unopposed so far for what would be her sixth term.
In 2000, Kessler won re-election over Teri Schwiethale of Port Angeles 66 percent to 34 percent.
Kessler is the current House Majority Leader.
She was House co-majority leader until the Democrats took control of the state House of Representatives following two special elections in 2001.
In other filings, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Bremerton, has filed for election to a 14th term in Congress.
