PENINSULA: Studded tires become outlawed Sunday

Get those studded tires off today or Saturday. They are be banned from Washington roads starting Sunday.

Those caught driving on them starting April 1 face a $71 fine.

The state bans studded tires through much of the year because the tires cause an estimated $9 million in damage to Washington roads each year, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Vehicles equipped with tires rated for use in mud and snow will meet approved traction tire requirements in the event of a late storm, state officials said.
