PREP ROUNDUP: Port Angeles, Sequim harriers dominate

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles girls cross country team dominated at a three-way meet with Kingston and North Mason, picking up seven out of the top eight spots.

Five out those seven girls were sophomores or freshmen. Roughrider Lauren Larson won Wednesday’s race with a time of 21 minutes, 49 seconds. Kynzie DeLeon came in second at 22:13, while Kaylee Helgeson was third at 23:11.

The Riders’ Ella Holland was fifth at 23:57, Emma Weaver sixth at 23:58, Jenna McGoff seventh at 24:00 and Katie Cobb eighth at 24:06.

In team points, Port Angeles had 17 points, Kingston 60 and North Mason 67 (lower scores win in cross country).

It was Larson’s third win of the season.

“It was a tough, real cross country course with plenty of hills, rough footing, sticks and brush to dodge. The kids loved it,” said Port Angeles coach Rodger Johnson

Other girls’ finishers include Maxine Waddell, 13th, 25:13; Alisandra Baccus, 20th, 27:37; Alyssa Peppers, 21st, 27:45; Olivia Carroll, 22nd, 27:54; Victoria Krause, 24th, 29:45; Daya Woodyward, 27th, 31:14; and Sarah Joulet, 28th, 34:26.

For the boys, the top finisher was Adam Borde, who finished fourth with a time of 19:07. Thoams Shaw was fifth with a time of 19:16, while Cameron Butler was seventh with a time of 19:28 and Gabriel Long was eighth at 19:29.

The boys finished second at the meet as a team, narrowly getting beat out by Kingston.

The Buccaneers won with 29 points to the Riders’ 35. North Mason was third with 71.

Other boys’ finishers include Joshua Gavin, 11th at 19:34.5, Logan Tyson, 12th at 19:41, Lucas Gavin, 17th at 20:01 and Nathan Marple 19th at 20:03.

Port Angeles runs in the Nike Hole in the Wall Invite in Lakewood on Saturday.

Sequim boys, girls win

SEQUIM — The Sequim boys and girls won a three-way cross-country meet with Olympic and Port Townsend.

Sequim’s Murray Bingham and Riley Pyeatt both dominated in Wednesday’s races. Bingham won the boys’ race by nearly a minute with a time of 17 minutes, 26.90 seconds. He beat out teammate Liam Byrne, who came in second with a time of 18:23.91.

While Bingham’s margin of victory was impressive, Pyeatt’s was even bigger — by a lot. Pyeatt, just a freshman, won her race in 21:20.93, beating teammate Jessica German by more than three minutes. German came in second with a time of 24:42.21.

It was Bingham’s second win of the season and Pyeatt’s first.

The Wolves took six out of the top seven spots in the boys race. Jasen Bartee finished third at 19:31.41, Koda Robinson fourth at 19:42.38, Fischer Jensen fifth at 20:04.35 and Jakob Pyeatt seventh at 20:18.82.

The best finishers for Port Townsend were Trilliam DeWyse, who came in eighth at 20:31.79 and Silas DeWyse, who finished ninth at 20:40.34.

The Sequim boys ended up with 15 points, which represents a sweep of the top five finishes. Olympic had 57 points and Port Townsend 65. Port Townsend’s Nathan Cantrell, who has won five races so far this season, did not run in the race.

For the girls, Eleanor Byrne of Sequim finished third at 25:10.56. The best Port Townend time was by Gina Brown at 27:14.89.

The Sequim girls had 19 points and Olympic 42.

Sequim travels to Bremerton Wednesday to compete against the Knights and North Mason in an Olympic League 2A meet. Port Townsend competes in the Bill Kehoe South Sound Invitational on Saturday.

Football

Crescent 57, Clallam Bay 6

CLALLAM BAY — Crescent’s Noah Leonard had four touchdowns and ran for 175 yards in a 57-6 win over Clallam Bay in six-man football.

Jayden Tejano, playing in his first-ever football game, also had a 61-yard catch for a touchdown for Crescent in Wednesday’s game. Kylan Scheid threw the touchdown pass. Brenton Dalton also had a 19-yard TD catch from quarterback Eric Emery.

Wyatt Lee also ran nine times for 63 yards and a touchdown for the Loggers, while Brayden Emery ran for 37 yards on three carries with a touchdown. Darren Lee also had a 7-yard touchdown run for the Loggers.

For the Bruins, Ryan Strid had a 64-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Colin Aldana.

After playing two straight six-man games against the Bruins, Crescent (2-0 league, 5-2 overall) returns to eight-man football on the road against Tulalip Heritage on Oct. 12. Clallam Bay (0-2) plays at Quilcene on Oct. 15.

POULSBO — League-leading North Kitsap beat the Port Angeles tennis team 6-1, with the lone Roughriders win coming from No. 1 singles’ player Hayden Woods, who beat the Vikings’ Sam Horn 6-2, 6-2.

“North Kitsap is talented and deep, which makes them difficult to beat especially at home,” said Port Angeles coach Brian Gunderson.
