PREP BOYS: Roughriders crush Kingston in league opener

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders forced 36 turnovers and scored 42 points in the paint in their Olympic League 2A Division opener to sink the Buccaneers at home on Friday

“Our defensive pressure caused a lot of problems and created a lot of transition points,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said.

“We shared the ball with 22 assists, so that embodies the style we like to play. We like to play defense, share the ball and be unselfish.”

Kyle Benedict had 28 points to lead the way for the Riders.

“Kyle picked up his fourth foul with about 7 minutes left in the third and we kept him in because we wanted him to work on playing under control. He knocked down three 3s in the third and really got a rhythm going.”

Garrett Edwards scored all 15 of his points in the first half for Port Angeles (1-0, 2-1).

Ulin was happy to see the Riders hit down some shots on the perimeter. Chase Cobb knocked down some 3s for us,” Ulin said. “He was really active, so I was excited for him.”

Ulin also said Stuart Methner played some effective on-ball defense.

“It was a great team win,” Ulin said.

The Riders visit North Kitsap on Tuesday in a big early season Olympic League contest.

“Now we are preparing for a huge battle at North Kitsap,” Ulin said. “They have a lot of talent, a great coach and they’ve won the league out four out the past five years, so they are the team to beat.”

The Wolves are off to a 2-0 start in league alone in first place and is 3-1 overall. “We’re doing all right. The tougher teams are still to come,” said Glasser.
