PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College athletes Alicia Dugan, Alex Baham, Bailie Zuber, Jose Soto, Yamilei Rodriguez and Akari Hoshino were honored at the college’s annual student awards presentation Tuesday.
Each year, the college’s athletic department honors two athletes from each soccer and basketball team who exemplify leadership, athleticism, academics and citizenship.
“We had a great year in athletics, winning our ninth NWAC [soccer] championship in seven years, capturing two more league titles, and getting all four teams into the playoffs — and these athletes were a very big part of our success,” said Rick Ross, associate dean for athletics and student life. “Our coaches and players work hard to represent the College well, on and off the field, and this was a special group.”
The Art Feiro Award for basketball went to sophomores Dugan and Baham.
The Wally Sigmar Award for soccer went to Zuber, a sophomore Carson City, Nev., and to Jose Soto, a sophomore from Ontario, Calif.
In addition, Pirate Athletics and the McMullen family annually award the William and Annie McMullen Award to returning female athletes who exemplify inspiration, dedication, accomplishment and ambassadorship.
This award went to Rodriguez, a freshman basketball player from Las Vegas and to Hoshino, a freshman soccer player from Tokyo.
The College also recognized Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year Kanyon Anderson.
Ross noted that Dugan, Baham, Zuber and Soto will all be playing at the four-year level next year.
“Congrats again to Coach Anderson, who has established himself as the premier women’s soccer coach in the NWAC, and to Yamilei and Akari for their awards, Ross said. “We’re looking forward to more great things from them in 2017-18.”
