Marine Area 6 closing to king retention Monday
PORT ANGELES — The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has elected to close Marine Area 6 (East Strait of Juan de Fuca) to salmon fishing starting Monday.
Fish managers say that fishery projections, based on dockside sampling, indicate Marine Area 6 will exceed the allowable limit of total chinook encounters — including both retained and released fish — prior to the planned April 15 closure date.
The fishery is being closed to control impacts on stocks of concern and ensure compliance with conservation objectives.
Hatchery chinook season is scheduled to remain open until Sunday, April 15 in neighboring Marine Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) and until Monday, April 30 in Marine Area 5 (Sekiu) and Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) also is planned to remain open until April 30.
