PORT ANGELES — Marine Drive in Port Angeles was blocked in both directions early this afternoon west of the Tumwater Truck Route after a car driver ran into a power pole, snapping it apart, Assistant Police Chief Jason Viada said.
“It would be very helpful if the public could avoid Marine Drive west of the truck route,” he said.
Viada said he did not have information on the condition of the driver, who collided with the pole in the 900 block of Marine Drive near the Boat Haven.
The transformer blew and pole debris was still on the ground as of 2 p.m. today, Viada said.
Viada said Hill Street near Ediz Hook can provide a suitable detour route for most drivers headed for and leaving Coast Guard/Sector Field Office Port Angeles and the mostly dormant Nippon Paper Industries USA plant, both in the Ediz Hook area.
“The problem is, that route doesn’t work for log trucks that need to pass through the industrial area,” Viada said.
“There are some logging trucks waiting to get through the scene.”
