THE BILLY SALLEE GOLF COLUMN: Charity tourney to tee off in Sequim next month

WHAT A GREAT day it was on Tuesday, and this week is one fine opportunity for playing golf.

There can be some great rewards for playing in a golf tournament this week.

The 11th annual Charity Golf Tournament will be held at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim.

This is the tournament produced by the guys and gals who keep the grass mowed and the sand traps raked (the greenskeepers) plus everything else needed to be done by the employees of the course.

The proceeds will go to benefit graduating seniors from Sequim High School to help pay for college enrollment fees.

For 11 years now this program has helped educate nearly 50 very fine young men and women.

The date for the tourney is Aug. 1. It is an 8 a.m. shotgun start, and the game will be played as a two-person scramble.

Prizes will be given for gross, net and Calloway divisions, and each entrant will be allowed a ticket for a drawing for an automobile from Wilder Auto Center in Port Angeles.

The entry fee is $80 per person. For that fee you will receive the golf, tee prize, buffet supper, beverages, some special oysters and a lovely dessert.

Call 360-683-5879 or 360-681-0692. Call today and let them know you want to join in some very good golf and food.

The first 40 players are assured a spot in the tournament. Cost is $25 for the entry fee and $25 for the honey pot.

It includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, KP’s, longest made putt and lunch.

Lunch is served at noon and the golf begins at 1 p.m.

Best Ball Blast

The Family YMCA in Port Townsend benefited from the golfers playing in Saturday’s 2009 YMCA Fourth of July Best Ball Blast.

Gabriel Tonan says the weather was great, and to him that means it was 80 degrees and just a slight bit of wind.

Tonan and his playing partner, Scott Nelson, teamed together for a score of 64 gross.

Don Moody and Dave Larson had a 56 to win the net division scoring, and Jack Caldwell teamed with Patsy Caldwell to win the mixed division net prize.

Mitch Black won the closest to the pin contest, and Scott Nelson won the longest putt contest.

With the help of the YMCA volunteers, the golf club raised about $3,500, and another $3,500 was raised at the raffle.

Plans are in the works now for another great tournament next year.

The Lady Niners of Dungeness played a low net game on July 2.

Barb Bullock shot a 30 for first place in the first division while Lindsay Busch shot a 31 for first place in the second division.

The professionals at Dungeness have been holding special training programs for the Lady Niners following the games for the last two weeks.

Bill Shea held a training session on how to drive the golf ball last week, and this week Garrett Smithson gave a seminar on putting.

Discovery Bay women

Up at Discovery Bay Golf Course the ladies golf club played a game where they were allowed to replay any four shots during the July 2 competition and enter the score.

In golfer’s terms, this means they were allowed four mulligans.

Lynn Pierle won the game with a 68. Just one stroke back was Pat Burns with a 69.

There was a tie for third place with Edna Chicarell and Marianne Ott, each scoring a 70.

Peninsula women

The Peninsula Golf Club of Port Angeles lady members played a medal play tournament, 18-hole competition, on July 2.

The nine-hole winners were Dona Scarcia with 37.5, Sandy Granger came in second with an even 40, and third place went to Boots Reidel with a 41.

SunLand women

The Sunland Women’s Golf Association played “6-6-6” on July 2.

A two-person partnership played a different game every six holes

A scramble for the first six, best ball for the next six and a Chapman for the final six.

The winners in flight one gross were Cheryl Coulter and Alice Myers with a 78. Flight one net first place went to Gerry Fuller and Jan Prout with a 60.

Flight two gross was won by Nadia Saulsbury and Patricia Palmeri with an 84. Flight two net brought a tie for first place for Cathy Mahnerd and Nola Freyer ,and Willadee Tallman and Barb Evans, each shooting a 63.

This rather condensed version of the weekly report was brought about by a time crunch.

Next week the regular format will be back in play. In the meantime, remember that “Golf is an easy game, it’s just hard to play!”
