STATE BOYS GOLF: Port Angeles finishes ninth as a team at 2A tournament; PT’s Morton 31st at 1A boys

UNIVERSITY PLACE — Port Angeles came away with a ninth-place finish as a team at the Class 2A state boys tournament Thursday at Chambers Bay.

The home of the 2015 U.S. Open, the links course offered up a stiff test for the Roughriders.

Junior Austin Peterson led the Roughriders with rounds of 84 and 87, good for a two-day total of 171 and tied for 29th place individually.

Port Angeles’ junior Alex Atwell posted rounds of 83 and 89 to finish tied for 33rd place.

Senior Micah Needham shot an 86 in Wednesday’s opening round but was disqualified from the event on Thursday.

Sammamish’s Matt Maresse shot 4-under-par 68 to win the title by 11 strokes over Bellingham’s Cody Roth.

Maresse led the event after posting a 65 in the first round, which included a hole-in-one on Chamber’s Bay’s signature hole, the par-3 15th.

Bellingham took the boys team title.
