SPORTS: Sequim and Port Angeles track teams soar in major invitationals

SNOQUALMIE — Sequim hurdler Emanuel Herrera and high jumper Jayson Brocklesby had state-caliber times and distances at the Mount Si Invitational track and field meet Saturday.

It was a tough eight-team meet with the Wolves tying for sixth place in the boys meet and taking seventh in girls action.

Snohomish won the boys competition with 133 points with O’Dea taking second with 106 and Hazen third at 97.

Sequim and Graham-Kapowsin tied for sixth with 57 points each.

Other teams included host Mount Si High School, Marysville-Pilchuck and Clover Park.

It was tough sledding for most Sequim athletes but Herrera shined with two first places in the powerhouse meet.

He won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.98 seconds, and he claimed the 300-hurdles title in 40.47, winning by nearly 3 seconds.

Brocklesby, meanwhile, won the high jump by nearly 2 feet with a leap of 6-04.

The next best place for the Sequim boys was fourth place as Mack Grinnell had that place in pole vault with a height of 11-06.

Claiming fifth place was Hamish Peers in javelin with a throw of 134-04 while Adrian Clifford had a strong meet with sixth place in the 1600 meters in 4:40.54, sixth in 3200 in 10:30.94.

Lopaka Yasamura took sixth in shot put with a heave of 41-07.50.

The Sequim 4×100 realy team was runner-up in 44.39 seconds with Brocklesby, Dylan Chatters, Christian Miles and Yasamura.

Girls meet

The Wolves were seventh in girls with 41 points, just missing sixth by a point.

Marysville-Pilchuck and host Mount Si tied for first place with 148 points each while Snohomish was third with 128.

Sarah Hutchison, Emily VanDyken and Jasmine McMullin had the top performances for the Wolves as both Hutchison and McMullin earned third places.

Hutchison captured third in 300 hurdles in 50.01 seconds, fourth in 100 hurdles in 17.52 seconds and tied for fourth in pole vault with VanDyken with heights of 7-06 each.

VanDyken also took fourth in high jump with a leap of 4-06.

PA in Bellevue

BELLEVUE — The Roughriders had some strong performances at the 36-team Bellevue Invitational on Saturday.

State-ranked Cameron Braithwaite captured first place in the triple jump in a very competitive field with a jump of 42-10.25.

He also claimed sixth place in long jump with a 19-11.25 effort and was ninth in javelin with a toss of 148-0.

Brendan Dennis took sixth place in the 800 meters, closing in on the magic 2-minute milestone with a 2:01 effort in a very strong field of runners.

Senior Jordan Norberg took seventh in javelin with an effort of 157-7 and pole vaulted to 10th place at 10-6.

On the girls side, two Riders claimed fourth place.

Tarah Erickson was fourth in pole vault by clearing 9-feet even, and she also jumped 29-8.75 in the triple jump.

Senior Katelyn Noard captured fourth place in javelin with a toss of 106-0 while teammate brittany Norberg took ninth with a 94-10 effort.

“This meet was a good dress rehearsal for postseason competition,” coach Pat Durr said.

“We left town at 6:01 a.m., and competed in the warm sun all day. The meet was over slightly after 7 p.m., caught the 8:10 ferry for home and got back to town by 10:45 p.m.

“We were tired. It’s tough to ask these kids to put in a 17-hour day and to compete at the elite level, but they are up to the task.”

Durr was happy with the effort of his throwers.

“Throws coach George Kheriaty has trained these kids well,” Durr said.

“Not too many other teams had six throwers being so competitive. We are looking to send two boys and two girls to state.

“That’s astounding for a 2A school.
