PORT ANGELES — It was like night and day for the Port Angeles and Sequim rivalry boys tennis match Friday on the Roughrider courts.
In an Olympic League match that started in the sunlight and ended under the lights, the Wolves swept the singles matches while the Roughriders took all of the doubles matches.
Since there are more doubles than singles matches in prep tennis, the Riders shaded the Wolves 4-3.
“This was a good win for us,” Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen said.
“We knew it was going to be close and fortunately we were able to come out on top.”
Playing in their final home match for the Riders were seniors Marcus Konopaski, Michael Konopaski and Kevin Herzog.
Gundersen singled out No. 4 doubles players Micah Needham and Jace Bohman as the players of the match.
The pair beat Brendon Hudson and Nick Johnston 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
“Micah and Jace have impressed me all season with their teamwork and composure,” Gundersen said.
“It paid off in a big way as they secured the team win with their play, especially in the third set.”
The Riders dominated No. 1 doubles but had battles on their hands at No. 2 and No. 3.
Michael and Marcus Konopaski defeated Matthew Richards and Brandon Payne 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1.
Also, Brady Konopaski and Kevin Herzog won a free-for-all at No. 2, finally getting by Saul Nava and Eli Berg 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
It wasn’t as close at No. 3 as Daniel Manwell and Hayden Kays-Erdmann beat Sequim’s Kevin Cassal and Dan Willis 7-5, 6-3.
The Wolves had a much easier time in the singles competition as they did not drop a set while sweeping e Riders.
Donovan Lee easily captured the No. 1 match, beating Alex Brown 6-3, 6-0, while Issaiah Dewan defeated Jeremy Choe 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
Victor Lam continued the winning ways for Sequim at No. 3, dropping Nick Fritschler 6-1, 6-1.
The Riders last regular season match is Tuesday at Olympic in Silverdale, with the Olympic League Tournament to follow Wednesday and Thursday.

SILVERDALE — The Redskins were unable to deal the Eagles their first loss of the season, falling in Olympic League action Thursday.
Port Townsend falls to 1-2 in league (3-6 overall), and Klahowya is now 4-0 (11-0 overall).
“We had several players sick but that takes nothing away from a superb Klahowya team that passes well, moves well and finishes well,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.
“They are strong contenders for a 2A state championship.”
The Eagles received two second-half goals from standout McKenzie Cook.
Foden was proud of the defensive performance of his under-the-weather squad.
“[Our] strategy was to defend and defend [we] did,” he said.
“The score would have closer at the end but for an inspired performance by McKenzie Cook.
“It was a good lesson in defending, and Anne Meek, Alex Akins and Malia Henderson, who saved countless shots on goal, rose to the occasion.
“We can look back on the game with pride and expect much better results in the remaining games.”
Port Townsend next hosts North Mason on Tuesday at Memorial Field.

HOQUIAM — The Spartans traveled to Hoquiam and were served a shutout by the Grizzlies in Thursday SWL-Evergreen Division competition.

POULSBO — The undefeated Sequim Wolves are now the Olympic League team to beat after becoming the first team since 2008 to beat perennial league powerhouse North Kitsap.
The Wolves ended the Vikings’ 30-match league win streak Thursday night as they won 26-24, 25-22, 25-20.
The victory gives Sequim (4-0 in league, 8-1 overall) the inside track to the league title because it is the last unbeaten team in conference.
The Vikings (2-1, 6-3), meanwhile, were perfect in league in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Klahowya 3,
Port Townsend 0
SILVERDALE — The Eagles had an easy time in the first game but the Redskins toughened up to play close in the last two games in Olympic League action.
Klahowya won by the scores of 25-10, 25-22, 26-24.
“We had a great serving game and serving is definitely one of our strengths this year,” Port Townsend coach Nettie Hawkins said.
“Our hitting needs to step it up a few notches if we want to see the postseason.
“We did play a smarter game tonight and that is a positive thing, but they out-smarted us just a few too many times.”
Megan Lee led the Cowboys with 14 digs while Megan Juran earned nine digs and two kills.
Avery Selisch, meanwhile, collected 11 digs with three kills and two serving aces while teammate Enani Rubio put down three kills and had four digs.
Setter Abby McGuire had 11 digs, eight assists and two kills for Chimacum.
Hoquiam 3,
Forks 0
HOQUIAM — The Spartans gave Hoquiam a good battle in the final two games but just couldn’t break through as Forks fell 25-11, 25-21, 25-18.
Setter Jillian Raben earned 12 assists and had two aces and two kills for the Spartans while Casey Williams was strong on the net with six kills and three blocks, and she also had three assists.
Karlee Hansen had a team-high seven kills, and she also had two assists while Sydney Christiansen earned three kills and two blocks, and Alissa Shaw had two kills and two assists.
Forks next will play Rainier on Tuesday at home for its Think Pink game for breast-cancer awareness, and asks that fans don’t forget to wear their pink.
Cross Country
Sequim sweeps
SEQUIM — The Wolves boys and girls both won a three-way meet with Port Townsend and Olympic though Sequim beat out the Redskins by just one point in the girls race at Robin Hill Park.
The Redskins captured the top two spots in the girls 2.95-mile race and three of the best five spots but the Wolves clustered up to get their best five runners in the top eight.
The Wolves had 28 points to the Redskins’ 29 while the Trojans were incomplete.
Port Townsend’s Brittany Grant won the girls race in 20 minutes, 3.58 seconds while teammate Peri Muellner was runner-up in 21:41.17.
Sequim was third and fourth as freshman Emily Webb claimed third in 22:10.59 and Amelia Ohnstad took fourth in 22:23.28.
Other top Sequim runners were Siana Turner, sixth; Emma Barrell, seventh; and Sydney Hastings, eighth.
Next across the finishing line for Port Townsend were Cassie Ann Ross, fifth; Hanna Trailer, ninth; and Frehiwot Piatt, 12th.
Sequim dominated the boys race with 27 points, followed by Olympic with 43 and Port Townsend with 67.
The Wolves took the top two places was Adrian Clifford captured the individual title in 16:16.33 on the 2.95-mile course while teammate Mikey Cobb was second in 16:26.46.
Xavier Frank was the top Port Townsend runner as he claimed fourth in 16:46.86 while teammate Ryan Clarke took sixth in 17:01.44.
Other Wolves scoring were Peter Ohnstad, seventh; C.J. Daniels, eighth; and Dylan Chatters, ninth.
Girls Swimming
PT undefeated
PORT TOWNSEND — The 1A Redskins improved to 5-0 in the 2A Olympic League after sinking Klahowya 122-48 on Thursday.
Sarah Allen and Olivia Cremeans were both double winners for the Redskins.
Allen won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke while Cremeans claimed the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke.
Other individual winners for Port Townsend were Darby Flanagan in the 200 free and Rose Ridder in the 100 free
The Redskins next swim at powerhouse Port Angeles this coming Thursday.
Port Angeles 120, Kingston 58
KINGSTON — The Roughriders improved to 5-0 in the Olympic League, leading to a showdown with 5-0 up-and-coming Port Townsend at the Riders’ William Shore Memorial Pool this Thursday.
Port Angeles, 5-1 overall, earned six more individual district qualifying times.
Qualifying times went to Ashlee Reid in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free, Carter Juskevich in the 200 individual medley, Brooke Sires in the 50 free and Lexie Pankowski in the 100 backstroke.
Juskevich and Tracie Macias both were double winners for the Riders as Macias took the 200 free and 100 back and Juskevich won the 200 individual medley and the 100 free.
Port Angeles placed first in 11 of 12 events, and the Riders outscored Kingston in 10 of 12 events.
In addition, the Riders swept the 200 freestyle.
The Riders have their final home meet this Thursday against Port Townsend.
The senior recognition meet will be for Tracie Macias, Lexie Pankowski and Kim Little John.
