SEQUIM — It went down to the final match, but the Port Angeles boys tennis team came away winners Wednesday.
The Roughriders squeaked past the Sequim Wolves 4-3 in a hotly-contested rivalry matchup, with the No. 3 doubles team of Easton Napiontek and Derek Crain clinching it.
The Olympic League showdown was tied 3-3 with just Napiontek and Crain’s match against Duncan Skinner and Andrew Gunstone still going.
The duo eventually won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, but not without being tested.
“They have been involved in some close matches and I was impressed with how they handled the big points,” said Port Angeles coach Brian Gunderson, who singled out the two as players of the match.
“We were in a similar position against North Kitsap and didn’t pull through, so it was great to see our guys learn from that.
“There are no easy matches against Sequim, so I’m very proud of our effort.”
Port Angeles’ Micah Roos took the premier match at No. 1 singles, beating three-time Class 2A state doubles representative Mallory Maloney 6-2, 6-4.
Hayden McCartney took the No. 2 singles match, and Jordan Negus and Chase Walsh the No. 2 doubles as the Riders’ other winners.
Sequim, meanwhile swept the top two doubles contests behind the duos of Michael Lee/Byron Boots and David Richards/Donavan Lee.
Evan Hill also scored a win in No. 3 singles for Sequim.
Port Angeles hosts North Mason today and Bremerton on Friday. Sequim visits Klahowya on Friday.

KINGSTON SWEEPS THREE-WAY
KINGSTON — The Buccaneers ran away with a pair of wins in a three-way Olympic League meet against the Riders and Redskins on Wednesday.
Kingston took the boys race with 28 points, while Port Townsend had 45 and Port Angeles 47. The Bucs also claimed the girls race with 27 points, while Port Townsend had 48 and Port Angeles 49.
Salt Creek champions Nicholas Schippers and Marina Roberts were the pace setters, with Kingston’s Schippers taking the 5-kilometer boys race in 16 minutes, 54.2-seconds.
Port Townsend’s Habtamu Rubio was close behind in 16:58.6. Nick Shindler was the only real threat for Port Angeles, with the time of 18:32.6.
Roberts from won the girls 5K in 19:11.7.
The closest competitor for Port Townsend was Brittany Grant with the time of 22:08.2. Khason Politika of Port Angeles was the top Rider in 23:02.7.
SEQUIM BOYS FIRST
SEQUIM — The Sequim boys took the top three spots at their three-way Olympic League meet against Klahowya and Bremerton on Wednesday to cruise to a win.
Sequim’s Adrian Clifford was the top finisher overall with a time of 17:04, as the Wolves finished with 25 points to Klahowya’s 32 and Bremerton’s 79.
Bremerton won the girls varsity race after outscoring Sequim 23-38. Klahowya did not have enough girls for a team.
Sequim’s Audrey Lichten, however, finished with the fastest time for the girls (18:36). The next runner was three minutes back.

SILVERDALE — The Wolves dropped to 2-2 on the year after losing a nonleague tilt to the Trojans 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22 on Tuesday.

VASHON ISLAND — The Cowboys were swept 25-21, 25-19, 25-17 in a Nisqually League match Monday.
Dani Kaminski led the Cowboys at the net while Megan Dukek and Lauren Thacker were perfect at the line serving.
