SPORTS: Port Angeles boys and girls basketball teams both lose sub-district seeding games

PORT ANGELES — Franklin Pierce’s speed was too much for Port Angeles in a Class 2A boys basketball sub-district seeding playoff game Thursday night.

“Their quickness caused us problems and we weren’t aggressive but we will be OK,” Port Angeles coach Wes Armstrong said.

The Riders now go into a seeding game for seventh-eighth seeds into the West Central District championships with Olympic of Silverdale at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Youthful Clallam Bay, with just one senior, played with senior-dominated Quilcene the whole way and ended the season with a 10-8 overall record.

“We wanted to finish with a winning record and get into the playoffs, and that’s what we did,” Clallam Bay coach Kelly Gregory said.

“We just came up short. We almost caught them at the end. Quilcene played tough in their environment and on their court.”

The Bruins led 6-4 in the first but the Rangers took the lead 13-12 at halftime.

Quilcene kept the lead in the third quarter, 22-16, and held off a rally by the Bruins in the fourth.

The Bruins were strong on the boards with Melissa Willis leading with 11 rebounds while Randall and Kirstin Erickson had 10 each.

Erickson is the lone senior for the Bruins. They had one eighth grader starting on the varsity team and two were coming off the bench.

“It will take us a couple of years to get to where we want to be,” Gregory said.
