PREP SPORTS: Shorthanded Port Townsend girls soccer falls in opener; other area reports

POULSBO — An undermanned Port Townsend girls soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 loss to the North Kitsap JV team.

With only 10 Port Townsend varsity players eligible, it was decided that the Redhawks would face the Vikings JV team.

“This was a form of scrimmage that helped both teams better understand their positions, strengths and weaknesses,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said following Tuesday’s match.

“NK were generous and gracious hosts.”

After about a half of play, the Redskins began to show progress.

“Hannah Marx and Rrutenna Ramires were full of running and Kaitlyn Meeks made some powerful surges into the NK defense,” Foden said.

“McKinzie Ginther adapted well to her new role in the center of defense and was ably partnered by Hannah Wilson.

“Mia Henderson was outstanding in goal and clearly the best player on the field.”

Port Townsend hosts Port Angeles at Memorial Field at 6:45 p.m. today.

SEQUIM — Port Angeles fell to Port Townsend in three sets and lost to Sequim 25-20, 22-25, 25-15.

“It was a good experience and measuring stick for us to see where we are starting the season,” Roughriders coach Christine Halberg said after Tuesday’s match.

“Our biggest need is to gain better ball control.

“Most of the time we showed great energy and enthusiasm, so we have a good base to build upon.”

Port Angeles opens the regular season at home tonight against Black Hills.
