POULSBO —After beginning the season with two nonleague games, the Roughriders faced a tall order: opening league play against the sixth-ranked Vikings on their home turf.
North Kitsap, which previously beat 4A South Kitsap 4-0, lived up to its hype by cruising to a 5-0 win Tuesday.
The Riders held strong defensively until the Vikings scored in the 16th minute, followed 4 minutes later by their second goal.
“That was the key moment of the game — we had a breakaway and a follow-up shot saved by their keeper, who then started a counterattack for NK’s second [goal],” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
Moseley named goalkeeper Zoe Owens and defenders Cami Raber and Madison St. George as defensive players of the game.
Owens recorded 10 saves while facing 22 shots on goal, and Raber and St. George earned all their bruises from the physical play on the defensive side.
Moseley also named Maddie Boe as transition player of the game.
Port Angeles (2-1) hosts Sequim (1-2, 2-2) at Civic Field tonight at 6:45 p.m.
The Wolves lost to Kingston 2-0 on Tuesday.
