PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Clallam Bay digs in to beat Forks

FORKS — Clallam Bay edged Forks in a tight, five-set volleyball match at Forks on Tuesday.

The Bruins won 25-22, 28-26, 19-25, 15-25, 16-14 to claim the nonleague victory.

“The girls serving really was a big factor in keeping the flow of our game going,” Clallam Bay coach Amanda Maines said.

“They played smart — hitting at key times and just playing at others. They were united as a team and heard and listened when I asked them for something.

“[I’m] really proud of them.”

Clallam Bay (2-0) opened its season with a 3-1 win over Lake Quinault last week.

“My girls are playing awesome [and] working together as a team,” Maines said.

“We have started this year really concentrating on serving and passing. [We are] hoping to have a strong season.”

The Bruins visit Lake Quinault on Tuesday.

Forks (1-1) plays in the Kitsap Classic on Saturday.

BREMERTON — The Wolves remained unbeaten in Olympic League 2A Division play, taking out Bremerton in straight sets 3-0.

Sequim won by the score of 25-12, 25-13, 25-17.

“We overpowered Bremerton with our offense and our tough defense,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.

Tayler Breckinridge led the team with 11 kills, 11 digs and three aces. Co-setter Brittney Gale had 13 assists and eight digs, while Kalli Wiker had nine assists and five kills. Wiker also served 15 for 16. Isabelle Dennis also served 15 for 16 with 14 digs.

Jayla Julmist added four kills and two blocks, while Arlene Law had three blocks.

Bremerton 2, Sequim 1 (3-1 penalties)

BREMERTON — The Wolves lost a 2-1 heartbreaker on penalty kicks on the road against Bremerton.

The Knights won the penalty kicks 3-1.

The score was tied 0-0 at the half. Sequim opened the scoring early in the second half with a header by Jessica Dietzman off a corner kick from Yana Hoesel.

Bremerton was able to score later in the second half to tie it in regulation. Alexis Smith had the one penalty kick goal for the Wolves.

“We played really well in the first half. We took a lot of shots, but we just couldn’t get it in the back of the net,” said coach Derek Vandervelde.

Vandervelde said it was just a momentary lapse of judgment that allowed the Knights a goal to tie it.

The good news is the Wolves did pick up a valuable point for ending the game tied in regulation, which could come in handy at the end of the season. The bad news is Sequim is still looking for its first win of the year after four matches. Vandervelde said the attitude of the girls is great.

“They’re fighters,” he said. “They’re taking it one game at a time and they’re going to bounce back.”

Sequim (0-2 1 point, 0-3-1) has a tall order in its next match, playing Olympic League 2A Division power Olympic (2-0, 4-0) at home at 6:45 p.m. today.
