PREP SPORTS: Port Townsend volleyball tops Crescent in nonleague contest; other area reports

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend and Crescent stepped out of Olympic League and North Olympic League volleyball play, respectively, with the Redhawks claiming a 25-12, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22 win.

Baili Shaw recorded six kills and four digs to lead Port Townsend in Wednesday’s game.

Megan Juran had four kills, Megan Lee 16 digs and Mikayla Hemsley totaled four aces for the Redhawks (0-2, 6-4).

Avery Selisch tallied three aces and five digs and Rio Golden had three kills and four digs for Port Townsend.

POULSBO — The Wolves held off the first-place Vikings for 60 minutes before giving up two goals late in the second half.

Playing against the wind in the first half of Tuesday’s game, Sequim’s defense of senior Shae Barrett, junior Mattie Clark, senior captains Shelby Lott and Lisa Radford and freshman goalkeeper Claire Henninger absorbed the Viking attack.

Lott led the back line, tracking the ball back into her own penalty box and then finding passes to the midfielders.

The Wolves relied heavily on counter attacks and on several occasions Heidi Veriede used her speed to break free down the left side.

In the second half, Sequim was able to stretch the game and central midfielders, as senior captain Maeve Harris and freshman Adare McMinn found more space and time.

They were able to connect passes with the tireless work of senior striker Hannah Gauthun and her strikemate, sophomore Abby Hanstead.

One of the Wolves’ best scoring opportunities came in the final minutes, when late substitute Sophie Radford worked several combinations with Harris, whose shot in the box was blocked by a defender.

Henninger ended the game with 18 saves.

Sequim (1-9, 4-10) finishes its season with road games against Bremerton (3-7, 5-9) on Monday and Olympic (8-1, 10-2-1) on Tuesday.
