PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles girls swimming wins fourth straight league title; other area reports

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls swim team celebrated senior night and clinched their fourth straight Olympic League title with a 127-55 win against Klahowya.

Port Angeles (7-0, 7-1) recognized five seniors at the meet: co-captain Carter Juskevich, co-captain Haili Farnam, Shelby Kluber, Mathide Warda and Jayden Sparhawk.

Junior Jaine Macias achieved a state-qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the event with a time of 5 minutes, 36.38 seconds.

Macias also won two other races, the 100 butterfly (1:01.18) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.89).

The Riders also had two district-qualifying times in the 100 backstroke, as Ashlee Seelye finished second (1:15.43) and Gennie Litel was third (1:15.60).

Juskevich won the 200 free and the 100 breast, while Kylee Reid claimed the 200 individual medley and the 100 back.

Port Angeles won nine of 12 events and outscored the Eagles in 10 of 12 events.

The Riders host the divisional invitational, the last chance for swimmers and divers to qualify for districts, at William Shore Memorial Pool on Tuesday.

Diving begins at noon and swimming starts at 3:30 p.m.

Port Angeles 4, Kingston 1

KINGSTON — The Roughriders moved three points clear of Bremerton for the fourth and final Olympic League playoff berth after knocking off the Buccaneers.

Port Angeles blew out Kingston 6-0 in the team’s earlier meeting this season, but Riders coach Scott Mosely said Thursday’s contest remained close throughout the first half.

“When you’ve won by a lopsided margin, the rematches can be tough,” Moseley said. “Kingston was playing for revenge.”

Port Angeles went ahead when Emily Boyd received the ball on a throw in from Taylar Clark and was able to place a shot past the Kingston goalkeeper.

Maddie Boe notched goals in the 53rd and 60th minutes of the match to put the game out of reach.

“Maddie’s goals were scored on her determination and effort,” Moseley said.

“Both involved her winning the ball in their box and working hard to get the shot.”

The Buccaneers rallied for a goal in the 62nd minute, but the Riders’ defense held.

Port Angeles’ final tally came on Boyd’s second goal of the night. Boyd now has a team-high 10 goals on the season.

“I think the team had amazing passing patterns and possession throughout the game, and it paid off by the amount of goals we had,” Boyd said.

Boe concurred.

“As a team, we’ve been working really hard, and I feel like tonight we finally came together and really capitalized on a lot of the chances we had,” Boe said.

The Riders outshot the Buccaneers 16-9, with 14 shots on goal.

The Port Angeles JV team topped Kingston 1-0.

The Riders (5-6-0, 9-6-0) host North Mason (7-3-0, 10-4-0) for senior night Wednesday at Civic Field.

KINGSTON — The Roughriders were swept 25-22, 25-10, 29-27 in a road loss to the Buccaneers.

“We lost two close sets tonight,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said.

“It was a tough loss. But they never gave up and played it out to the end.”

Genna Orr and Emily Johnson tied for the team lead in kills with four apiece.

Johnson added 11 digs and a team-high 12 assists.

Brennan Gray led the Riders with 17 digs and also had three kills.

Kiana Robideau put down a team-high five aces and added three kills.

Aeverie Politika chipped in with two blocks and Alyssa Sweet had a block.

Port Angeles (3-8, 3-9) wraps its season with senior night festivities at home against North Mason (0-10, 1-12) on Tuesday.

Coupeville 3, Chimacum 1

COUPEVILLE — The Cowboys dropped into a second-place tie with the Wolves after falling 20-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-15 on the road.

Chimacum (2-2, 7-7) still holds the head-to-head tiebreaker, however, having beaten Coupeville (2-2, 4-8) in two of three matches this season.

Three out of the four Olympic League 1A teams will make the postseason.

Thursday, the Cowboys lost starter Audrey Thacker to an injury suffered in pregame warmups.

Sophia Thurston was perfect from the service line for Chimacum, connecting on all 17 attempts and racking up five aces.

She added three kills, three digs and a block.

Taylor Carthum served 17 of 19 with three aces and had 10 assists and eight digs.

Chelsey Johnson contributed three kills, five digs and a block.

Alina Preston served 11 of 15 with five aces, a kill and seven digs.

Ryley Eldridge notched 22 digs and a kill.

Shanya Nesbit added seven digs, two kills and an ace.

Chimacum visits Port Townsend on Monday.
