PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles girls soccer loses defensive duel; other area reports

KINGSTON — The Port Angeles Roughriders girls soccer team fell in a tense penalty kick shootout to the Kingston Buccaneers in a match between Olympic League postseason contenders.

The bulk of Saturday’s game was fought through the midfield, with few shots being taken on goal.

“It was a classic defensive matchup for both sides. Neither were able to generate much offense, and the stats show that,” Riders coach Scott Moseley said.

Port Angeles ended the match with five shots, while Kingston had only one, meaning Riders keeper Zoe Owens only had to make one save.

After a scoreless regulation, the two five-minute “Golden Goal” halves also ended without a goal.

Unfortunately for the Riders, Kingston was able to find the back of the net four times to Port Angeles’ two in the shootout.

“There’s a lot of pressure to step up and make the penalty kicks with the game on the line, but we need to do much better next time,” Moseley said.

In spite of the loss, Port Angeles (2-3, 4-2) earned one point in the league standings, while Kingston earned two.

The two teams will face off again at Port Angeles’ senior night on Thursday, Oct. 23.

Saturday’s JV match mimicked the varsity match, ending in a 0-0 tie.

Sequim 4, Port Townsend 0

PORT TOWNSEND — The Wolves defeated the shorthanded Redhawks at Memorial Field on Saturday with four goals in the first 21 minutes of the match.

Sequim finally broke through in the 12th minute, and scored three more goals over the next nine minutes.

Shelby Lott tallied three of those goals for a hat trick for the Wolves, and Gretchen Happe scored the other.

As has become the custom for Port Townsend, the second half was a different story of much improved play.

“[Our] passing improved and with the energy of Rrutenna Ramires and Laura Garcia leading the attack, suddenly [we] began to create chances,” Redhawks coach Colin Foden said.

Malia Henderson made a rare appearance at a position other than goalkeeper, and Foden said Garcia played well after replacing Henderson in goal.

“A special mention for the outstanding and intelligent work of Hannah Wilson and Rosemary D’Andrea who, with McKinzie Ginther keep [the team] in reach of their opponents,” Foden said.

“This is the first time this group have played at the same time, but it looks promising for when the league games begin next Saturday.”

The Redhawks also had Chloe Dawson, whose running start schedule keeps her from most games, but, Foden said, “she is a welcome addition to the squad.”

Port Townsend hosts Forks for a nonleague game Thursday, while Sequim has an Olympic League matchup with Bremerton at home.

Crescent wins Sequim JV tournament

SEQUIM — The Loggers started hot and never cooled, winning all 10 sets they played to taking home the Sequim JV Tournament title.

“We came out strong and continued strong all day,” Loggers coach Alex Baker said following Saturday’s tournament. “To play consistent for 10 games is huge for us.”

Baker said he believes this is the first time Crescent has won the tournament in school history.

The Loggers topped the Port Angeles JV 25-23, 25-18 in the championship game.

Crescent also beat Clallam Bay 25-13, 25-11; Neah Bay 25-15, 25-15, 25-5; and the Sequim JV 25-13, 25-17, 25-21.

“We played well in every aspect of the game and showed a great attitude,” Baker said.

Tournament teams included Neah Bay, Clallam Bay, and JV squads from Port Angeles, North Mason and Sequim.

“Jade Blazek had an outstanding day at setter for us,” Baker said.

Blazke served 26 of 33, with eight aces, 26 assists, two kills and a tip.

Shannon Williams was even better, going 50 for 52 from the service line, with 24 aces, 18 kills, seven blocks and five tips for points.

“She was a dominant force today,” Baker said.

Lauren Hartley was 22 for 33 on serve, with 18 aces, nine kills and two tips.

Lake Quinault wins

The Loggers lost to Lake Quinault 24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 in a nonleague match held Friday.

Baker praised the play of Ryan Lester, who recently made the jump from junior varsity to playing outside hitter for the Crescent varsity.

Lester had four kills in the match.

“More than the stats, it’s the attitude and hustle and dedication she is bringing to the court,” Baker said.

Williams served 14 of 18 with four aces and four blocks, nine kills and two tips for points.

The Loggers visit Neah Bay on Thursday.

Port Townsend 3, Vashon 0

VASHON — The Redhawks stymied the Pirates 25-18, 27-25, 25-23.

Abby McGuire finished with 12 assists, five kills and nine digs for Port Townsend.

Megan Lee had 15 digs, while Megan Juran served up four aces and had eight digs.

Baili Shaw contributed four kids and four digs, Amy Hemsley had four assists and seven digs and Rio Golden finished with five kills and three digs.

The Redhawks (3-2) travel to face Port Angeles on Tuesday before playing their first home game of the season Monday, Oct. 13. Port Townsend has been forced to play all its matches on the road so far this season while their gymnasium is being renovated.
