PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles won a rain-delayed boys tennis match against rival Sequim 4-3.
The match began Monday but the finish was postponed until Tuesday.
With only one match left in the season, the Roughriders are one win away from attaining their goal of winning their final three matches.
“These are all terrific tennis players as well as students that all of Port Angeles can be proud of,” Riders coach Gil Stockton said.
“They are all fine young men and a treat to work with.”
Port Angeles’ (8-4, 10-4) regular season finale scheduled for Wednesday at Kingston (5-7, 6-8) was postponed until today due to inclement weather.
It was the second 4-3 score in the Sequim-Port Angeles rivalry this season. The Wolves won by that score at home last month.
The loss to the Riders was only the second of the season for Sequim (10-2, 11-2), which can clinch the Olympic League championship with a win over Olympic (2-8, 3-9) today.
Port Angeles’ Janson Pederson won the No. 1 singles match over Sequim’s Matthew
Richards when Richards did
not travel to Tuesday’s continuation of the match, according
to Stockton.
Pederson took the first set Monday 6-2 and was leading the second 4-3 when the match was delayed.
Stockton awarded the match ball to his No. 1 doubles team Alex Brown and Tanner
Gochnour for their “focused intensity by defeating their opponents in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 after an earlier season’s loss to the same players.”

KINGSTON — The Wolves won their first Olympic League match of the season when Hannah Gauthan scored in overtime.
Senior captain Maeve Harris sent a free kick into the mixer. Junior Maddie Clark picked up the deflected ball and passed it to Gauthan, who scored the goal in the closing minutes.
Sequim’s freshman goalie Claire Henninger stopped two shots from point-blank range to keep the shutout.
She was supported by the defense of senior captains Shelby Lott and Lisa Radford as well as senior Shae Barrett and junior Mattie Clark.
The Wolves’ midfield played a game filled with control and connected passes. Junior Gretchen Happe and freshman Adare McMinn flanked the center midfielders seniors Heidi Vereide and Harris.
Happe and Vereide both took hard shots on goal.
The Wolves (1-6, 4-7) have their senior night tonight against Port Angeles (3-4, 5-5) at Sequim High School.

PORT ANGELES —
For the second game in a row, the Roughriders started slow by giving up a goal in the first 90 seconds.
Unlike against North Mason, though, Port Angeles was not able to recover Tuesday night at Civic Field.
“You can’t give the best team in the league a 1-0 lead in such a short time,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
“We weren’t passing well and our work rate was sub-par. They made us pay for that.”
After falling behind 3-0, the Riders did get a goal back when an Emma Moseley free kick bounced around in the box and was finished by junior midfielder Madison St. George.
The Vikings earned a final late tally to make the game 4-1.
Moseley singled out goalkeeper Zoe Owens for her 11 saves in keeping the Riders close.
“Zoe turned in another excellent game,” he said. “She has really sure hands and was able to tip a number of shots that were going in.”
Overall, North Kitsap had 28 shots on goal while Port Angeles had nine.
The Riders (3-4, 5-5) travel to Sequim on Thursday for the rivals’ final regular season meeting of the year.
The Port Angeles JV team lost to North Kitsap 4-0.

“Defense played tough with Payton Harding, V. Goodlance and Becka Johanson anchoring a defense that is playing better as a unit,” Morton said.
“We have come a long way as a team and they never give up. It is very rewarding to watch the growth of our team. They are already looking forward to next season and getting better.”
The Spartans host unbeaten Montesano today.

Alina Preson had seven kills for the Cowboys, libero Alyssa Hamilton tallied 24 digs, and Ryley Eldridge finished with eight digs.
Hamilton also helped Chimacum’s passing.
“Passing was definitely key in the game because my hitters were able to do something with it,” Archambault said.
“All of the girls did a great job passing.”

Chartraw was 12 of 15 on serve with three aces, six kills and two blocks.
“The team I have this year has a good amount of experience and we have gals that can play in numerous positions, so we played all 14 players and everybody got some playing time,” Monette said.

KINGSTON — The last-place Buccaneers gave the Wolves a tough test, but Sequim won in three sets 25-22, 25-23, 25-20.
“Apparently we were a little slack, a little unfocused,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said of Tuesday’s match.
Emily Wallner began the match with a serving run of eight straight points.
Wallner finished with eight aces — six coming in the opening set — while serving 17 for 22 and had 10 assists.
“I’m not sure where we would have been without our tough serving,” Webber Heilman said.
Emma LeBlanc served 16 for 17 — a fine performance, but it came with a bit of disappointment because, according to Webber Heilman, LeBlanc “hasn’t missed a serve in weeks” — and had 16 digs and seven perfect serve-receive passes.
Alyse Armstrong served 4 for 4 and had nine kills, seven assists and three stuff blocks.
Maddie Potts served 9 for 9 with three aces and also had three kills.
Rylie Roberts had six kills for Sequim, while Megan Brecknridge contributed five.
