“It was a good all-around team effort, and [we are] excited to get [our] season going on the right foot after a 2½-week training camp,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.

Freshman Samuel Gomez was brought down in the goal box and Alvaro Ortiz struck the game-winning penalty for Forks on Tuesday.

“He sent in a line drive to the lower left corner,” Spartans coach Joe Morton said.

“I don’t know how long it’s been since the boys in Forks won a game.”

Chimacum had tied the game at 4-all just seconds before the end of regulation, and that goal came just after Forks’ Julian Ortiz converted a penalty on a Cowboys handball in the box.

“That was pretty remarkable right there,” Morton said.

“I’m proud of the entire team.”
