PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles boys basketball season ends short of postseason; other area reports

Editor’s Note: Updated to correct the all-around finishes of Port Angeles and Sequim gymnasts.

KINGSTON — The Port Angeles boys basketball season ended without a district tournament berth with a 55-47 loss to Kingston in the regular season finale.

“We came up just a little short on the road,” Roughriders coach Kasey Ulin said.

“We were down three at the half ,and Kingston shot the ball extremely well in the second half.

“We fell behind by 14 and ended up cutting it down to six but couldn’t get any closer.”

Ulin said senior guard Miki Andrus provided a spark off the bench in the loss.

“He hit some big shots and helped get us back in the game,” Ulin said.

Ulin was proud of the team’s effort this year despite a tough record (2-10, 5-15).

“We lost six or seven games that could have easily been ours if the ball bounces our way,” Ulin said.

“I’m so proud of the guys. We never used the excuse of the coaches [being hired] late and not having an offseason together.

“The guys continued to work hard and improve everyday.

“I want to thank the seniors for their leadership and sacrifices, we are building a program from the ground up, and in a couple years when we get this rolling they will be a major reason for our future success.”

CLALLAM BAY — Abraham Venske scored 12 of his 20 points in the third quarter as the Red Devils rolled past the Bruins.

Venske had the hot hand, hitting on 10 of 15 shots from the field in Friday’s game.

Kenrick Doherty Jr. chipped in 12 points, Ryan Moss put up nine and John Reamer added eight for third-ranked Neah Bay (5-0, 13-2).

As a team, the Red Devils shot 33 of 59 overall from the floor.

Alan Greene scored 17 to lead Clallam Bay (2-3, 8-10).

Sam Signor added 12 and Clayton Willis scored eight for the Bruins.

Clallam Bay was without top scorer Kelly Gregory for the second straight game.

The two teams meet again Tuesday before opening the playoffs.

FORKS — The Spartans had a sick finish to the season.

Leading scorer Colton Raben missed Friday’s game with a 103-degree fever.

Second-leading scorer Parker Browning played, but was recovering from a bout with pneumonia, and third-leading scorer Marky Adams was only a couple days removed from his own sickness.

“We were pretty sick,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.

“You could tell it was a different team than the improved team we’ve had in the second half of the season.”

Browning was held to four points. Adams tied for the team lead with six points and did well on the glass.

“It was a physical both game by both teams, and he did a good job rebounding when he was in there,” Gooding said.

JV player Scott Archibald tied adams for the team scoring lead with six points, all coming in the fourth quarter.

Archibald and another JV player, Xavier Ponce, scored 11 of Forks’ 12 points in the fourth quarter.

It was an unfortunate end to Raben’s high school career.

“He tried like heck, was wanting to come,” Gooding said.

“Basically, his dad and I made the decision that it was better for him to not play.”

The Spartans finish the season with a 4-15 record (2-12 in Evergreen League).

Gooding expressed gratitude to his coaches and everyone who helped or supported the team this season.

“It’s definitely a process and takes a lot of people,” Gooding said.

“There’s a lot of good people that help in out in Forks. It just amazes me how much everybody helps out.

“Hopefully we can stick together and improve over the summer.”
