LOPEZ ISLAND — Lopez quickly buried Clallam Bay with 38 first-quarter points en route to a 56-0 Northwest Football League victory.
“We got off to a real slow start and couldn’t recover,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said.
“We turned it over twice early in the first quarter, and they scored off of both of those.
“If you get off to a slow start and get down 25-30 points, it’s nearly impossible to get yourself back in it.”
Ritter couldn’t find one glaring cause for the defeat.
“I don’t think it was anything they did, but there were so many factors, I can’t even pinpoint it to one,” he said.
“It was just tough all around.”
Kyle Keys led the Bruins with 13 rushes for 105 yards.
Running back Casey Randall added five rushes for 40 yards, caught two passes for 34 yards and tallied 11 tackles on defense.
After halftime, Ritter added another man to the offensive line and that brought about more success.
“We made some adjustments at halftime and did a lot better,” Ritter said.
“The kids came out with their heads up and picked up some yards, we just couldn’t get any scores.”
Ritter praised the interior defense of nose tackle Justin Messinger and linebacker Kelly Gregory.
“Justin really plugged the middle and held strong,” Ritter said.
“They had to double-team him most plays and they just got around us on the outside for big plays.”
Ritter said Gregory recorded eight tackles and Messinger had four.
“If there are some good things to take away from this one, it would be their performances,” Ritter said.
Clallam Bay (0-2, 3-3) is set to host Crescent (0-2, 2-4) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Lopez (1-1, 4-2) moves into a tie for third place with Tulalip Heritage in the Northwest Football League.

SEQUIM — The Wolves went toe-to-toe with the second-place Trojans in Olympic League play Thursday night.
The Sequim defense — consisting of seniors Lisa Radford, Shelby Lott and Shae Barrett and junior Mattie Clark, all of whom played the entire 80 minutes — conceded only one goal to an Olympic team that has averaged nearly three goals per game.
The Wolves open the second half of their season Tuesday evening with a road game versus Kingston (3-3, 5-5). They will then host Port Angeles (3-3, 5-4) on Thursday in their final home game of the season and senior night.
Sequim (0-6, 3-7) has met stiff competition in the Olympic League’s 2A Division but has had a recent run of good form which includes Thursday’s loss to Olympic (5-1, 7-2) and a shootout loss to Bremerton (1-5, 3-7) last Tuesday.
Freshman Claire Henninger, recently promoted to starting varsity goalkeeper, kept a clean sheet in a 4-0 win over Port Townsend, a game that also saw senior Shelby Lott score a hat trick.
In the penalty shootout against Bremerton, Henninger saved three kicks while also scoring her own kick.
The Sequim midfield has been led by senior Maeve Harris, who has created four assists and is tied for the team scoring lead with Lott with four goals.
Freshman Adare McMinn has joined Harris as a consistent midfield player and has contributed two goals.
The team goal production is rounded out by three strikers. Senior Hannah Gauthun and sophomore Abby Hanstead have each netted three goals, while junior Gretchen Happe has scored once and offered up two assists.
Chimacum 1, Port Townsend 0
PORT TOWNSEND — In the Cowboys opened Olympic League 1A play claiming their second win of the season, beating the Redskins at Memorial Field on Saturday.
Freshman Emma Craighead scored and was assisted by freshman May Ann Eastwood.
Junior Kyah McKinley recorded five saves as Chimacum’s goalkeeper, and sophomore Mechelle Nisbet led the defensive effort at stopper.
Chimacum (1-0, 2-6) hosts North Mason (4-4-1) on Tuesday in a nonleague game.
