PREP SOFTBALL: Sequim wins opener over Forks

Wolves’ Owens goes the distance on the rubber

SEQUIM — The Sequim softball team got a solid complete-game performance from pitcher Neveah Owens and four RBIs from Taylee Rome and Mikki Green in the middle of the lineup in beating Forks 7-3 in a season-opening victory.

Owens went seven innings, allowing two earned runs and seven hits while striking out two. After giving up a couple of big hits to the Spartans in the early innings, she settled down to hold Forks scoreless over the final four innings.

Forks got a solo home run from Keira Johnson and an RBI double from Fynlie Peters.

The Forks duo of Lizzy Soto and Chloe Gaydeski allowed only five hits. Soto started in the circle, going two hitless innings, though Sequim scored three unearned runs against her. Gaydeski pitched the final four innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. She struck out five.

Green went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs, while Rome had an RBI double, finishing with three runs scored, two RBIs and two walks. Ava Ritter scored two runs.

Soto went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. Bailey Johnson, Kaidence Rigby and Gaydeski also had hits for the Spartans.

Sequim (1-0) is off for a full week and returns to the diamond next Tuesday to host Bainbridge in an Olympic League opener.

Forks (0-1) was scheduled to play a doubleheader against Hoquiam and Montesano in Montesano today after press deadline. The Spartans are next scheduled to play at home at 5 p.m. Friday against Hoquiam.

Baseball Bainbridge 8, Sequim 0

BAINBRIDGE — The Sequim baseball team lost 8-0 on the road Tuesday against Bainbridge in the Wolves’ Olympic League opener.

Sequim collected three hits in the loss, by Lincoln Bear, Ethan Staples and Brayden White.

On the mount, Staples took the loss, going three innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out three. Bryant Laboy went the final three innings, allowing no earned runs, while giving up two hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Sequim (0-1, 1-1) next hosts Bainbridge (1-0) at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
