PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Forks survives Tenino 20-19; other area reports

FORKS — The Forks Spartans survived a comeback attempt by Tenino to win their homecoming game 20-19 and claim their first Evergreen League victory of the season.

Dimitri Sampson scored for Forks on its first play from scrimmage, taking a jet sweep 76 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-6.

The Spartans (1-2, 2-3) added a 10-yard run by Miguel Morales in the second quarter and a 3-yard run by Javier Contreras in the third to grab a 20-6 lead.

They appeared set up to add to their lead when Contreras intercepted a pass near midfield. But a personal foul on Forks negated the interception and flipped the momentum.

Tenino (0-3, 2-3) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Fortunately for Forks, the Beavers missed two of their three PATs in the game to leave the Spartans with a 20-19 lead that held up.

Forks coach Mark Feasel said his team came out of the game a bit roughed up and likely will be shorthanded for next week’s home game with Hoquiam (2-1, 3-2).

“The kids played really well, but we took some hits in that game,” Feasel said.

“For us, when we’re not fully loaded, we’re going to be in trouble.”

Centralia 34, Sequim 28, overtime

SEQUIM — The Wolves’ chance to tie or win was stuffed on a fourth-and-1 run by Chris Whitaker at the Tigers’ 16-yard line.

Sequim scored two consecutive touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead in the first quarter.

First, Miguel Moroles hooked up with Bailey Earley for a 38-yard touchdown pass, and later, Whitaker ran in from 5 yards out.

Centralia, though, scored 21 points in the second quarter, giving the unbeaten Tigers (5-0) a commanding 28-14 lead at halftime.

The Wolves came back in the third quarter, tying the game with a 20-yard scoring strike from Moroles to Dylan Lott and a 10-yard run by Ethan Richmond.

The score remained 28-28 throughout the fourth quarter, setting up the extra period.

Centralia scored on a 3-yard run by Javon Brager. The PAT was missed, giving Sequim the opportunity to win with a touchdown and a kick, but the Wolves fell 1-yard short of extending their overtime drive.

Whitaker led Sequim in rushing with 90 yards on 16 carries.

Moroles completed 10 of 18 pass for 107 yards and rushed for 71 yards on 12 carries.

Earley led the Wolves in receiving with four catches for 62 yards, while Lott hauled in three catches for 24 yards and Ian Dennis had three receptions for 21 yards.

Sequim (1-1, 3-2) returns to Olympic League play this Friday with a home game against North Mason (2-1, 3-2). The Bulldogs are coming off a 50-8 pounding at the hands of eighth-ranked North Kitsap (2-0, 5-0).

Lummi 65, Clallam Bay 30

BELLINGHAM — The Bruins allowed 47 first-quarter points to fall hard in their Northwest Football League opener Friday night.

“It was horrible, horrible,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said.

“They’re a good team, but we made them look great. It was just horrible.

“We just came out flat. I can’t attribute it to one thing, just everything.”

Casey Randall had two touchdowns for the Bruins, including a 75-yard kick return for a score, but only played a little more than a quarter due to injuries.

“Casey only played about a quarter and a half,” Ritter said.

“That’s 80 percent of our offense, so that took a big hit. He’s also big on defense.

“He took a beating.”

Randall did return late in the game and caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Keys as time expired. That final play only happened because an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Blackhawks as time expired gave Clallam Bay one more play.

Keys was one bright spot for the Bruins, despite a relentless Lummi pass rush.

“Kyle Keys, he stood in there and played a pretty decent game,” Ritter said.

Keys ran for 49 yards and passed for 54 yards. He scored a touchdown and passed for three more.

Clallam Bay also had a big play from one of its eighth-graders, as Clayton Willis returned a kick 70 yards for a touchdown.

“He’s going to be a real good player,” Ritter said.

The Bruins (0-1, 3-2) have another long road trip this Saturday for a game against Lopez.
