PREP BASKETBALL: Sequim boys rally in second half to defeat Chimacum; other area reports

CHIMACUM — A strong second half helped the Sequim boys basketball team defeat Chimacum 63-49 in nonleague action.

The Cowboys led 11-10 after one quarter and 25-22 at half.

The Wolves responded to outscore Chimacum 41-24 in Wednesday’s second half to turn a three-point deficit into a 14-point win.

Sequim has won all four games it has played against fellow North Olympic Peninsula teams this season.

Vance Willis led the Wolves by scoring 19 points for the second consecutive game.

Alex Barry, who was saddled foul trouble, finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks.

Jackson Oliver added eight points and five assist for Sequim and Dusty Bates contributed seven points.

Chimacum was led in scoring by Orion Weller, Brendon Naylor and John Carthum.

Weller picked up his fourth foul early in the fourth quarter, which Cowboys coach Jim Eldridge said hampered his team.

Sequim (3-3, 8-6) returns to Olympic League 2A play tonight on the road against Bremerton (3-3, 5-6). The Wolves and Knights are tied for third place halfway through the league season.

Chimacum (2-0, 3-9), which leads Olympic League 1A, is off until next Wednesday when it takes the ferry to Coupeville (0-2, 3-8).

JOYCE — Kelly Gregory Jr. had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead the Bruins to a win in their North Olympic League opener against the Loggers.

Clallam Bay (1-0, 5-5) took a 36-19 lead into halftime after outscoring Crescent 20-8 in the second quarter.

But the Loggers responded in the third and fourth quarters to close the gap.

“We faulted slightly in the second quarter but outscored the Bruins in the second half,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said following Wednesday’s game.

“It’s great to see our boys starting to play together as a team.

“Clallam Bay has some great kids, and we are really glad to be able to play them competitively.”

Bruins coach Kelly Gregory Sr. said his team’s aggressive play led to too many fouls which hampered them as the game progressed.

“We were pressing and we had a big lead at half and we got in foul trouble,” Kelly Gregory Sr. said.

“But you have to give them [Crescent] credit, they played hard.”

Kyle Keys added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists for Clallam Bay, while Sam Signor had eight points and seven rebounds, Alan Greene had eight points and five assists and Dakota Cowdry scored four points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Crescent’s Martin Waldrip led all scorers with 17 points. Neil Peppard scored nine points, KC Spencer had seven and Wyatt McNeece contributed six points and was a presence on the boards.

“Martin did an outstanding job leading the team, while Wyatt did a great job on the boards,” Heaward said.

“KC hit some much-needed 3s towards the end.”

Clallam Bay continues league play today at home against fourth-ranked Neah Bay (1-0, 7-2).

Crescent, meanwhile, plays at Taholah tonight.

Kingston 44, Port Angeles 38

KINGSTON — The Roughriders scrapped with the Olympic League-leading Buccaneers but were unable to hold onto a 19-9 halftime lead.

Port Angeles went cold in the third quarter, hitting just 2 of 12 shots as Kingston turned a 10-point deficit into a 29-24 lead heading to the fourth.

“We shot 17 percent in that quarter, 40 percent for the rest of the game,” Riders coach Michael Poindexter said of Wednesday’s third quarter.

Katyn Flores led Port Angeles with 14 points and Hayley Baxley added 13.

“Both Katyn and Hayley did an excellent job with shot decisions and dribble attacks in the game,” Poindexter said.

Maddie Boe scored six, with five rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Riders.

“We held Kingston to 44 points, 12 points below their season average, and the lowest in their six league games,” Poindexter said.

“However, we allowed too many driving opportunities through the top of our zone in the second half, which partly contributed to Kingston’s second-half comeback.

“We lost a couple of our top rebounders to injury and foul trouble, helping the taller Buccaneers to get 16 offensive rebounds, which was also a factor in their win.”

Port Angeles (2-4, 6-8) hosts Olympic (5-1, 9-4) today.

NW Yeshiva 41, Quilcene 31

SEATTLE — The Rangers struggled from the start against the 613s and couldn’t recover.

“It was a tough game to watch, as [we] seemed to do everything in slow motion,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said.

“We didn’t bring our A-game on Tuesday night.

“Consistency has been the biggest challenge for the team this year. We can play the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the league and give them a game and then turn around the next week and crash and burn.”

Sammy Rae turned in another double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Rangers.

Katie Love added eight points, four rebounds and two steals for Quilcene.

The Rangers (1-3, 8-5) host Christian Faith today.

JOYCE — A youth movement led the Bruins to victory against the Loggers.

“Our younger players really stepped it up for us, Clallam Bay coach Kathleen Winter said.

Freshman Atokena Abe lead all scorers with 20 points, hauled down 14 rebounds and grabbed seven steals for the Bruins.

“She really had an outstanding game for us,” Winter said.

“Sophomore Mariah LaChester was essential on our press coming up with 10 steals, [and] sophomore Molly McCoy also had a standout game with 8 boards and four steals.”

Winter described McCoy’s performance as “the most physical game I’ve ever seen Molly play.”

The North Olympic League opener was a crucial game for the Bruins, according to Winter.

“This was a very important game for us, so we came at them with a full-court press and played a few different defenses to rattle their offense,” Winter said.

“We had poor shooting the first quarter but poured it on in the second to grab a 17-point lead.”

Shannon Williams had 12 points and Lauren Hartley chipped in with nine for Crescent.
