PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Forks wins sixth straight as record falls

MOUNT VERNON — It was a lot of good news tinged with a bit of bad for the Forks girls basketball team in the Spartans’ game Friday morning against Lummi in the Mount Vernon Christian Holiday Tournament.

The good news. The Spartans won 57-29 for their sixth straight victory. Even better news. Their leading scorer Keira Johnson poured in 26 points to break the Forks school record of 1,303 points.

The bad news is Chloe Gaydeski turned her ankle in the first quarter. It was a serious enough injury that she went to an emergency room at a Mount Vernon hospital.

Coach David Hurn reiterated that his team is grinding through its early season, with 10 out of the team’s 11 games on the road. The Spartans have traveled as far as Ilwaco, Seattle and Mount Vernon to play games.

“We’ve had one home game. We’ve been traveling all over,” Hurn said.

Johnson broke the school record in the second quarter. It was previously held by Madison Justice, who set it in 2008.

As far as Gaydeski, Hurn is optimistic.

“Hopefully we’ll get good news and it’s nothing too major. She’s a good player and a good kid. She’ll be fine,” he said.

Janessa Ramos scored 11 and Bailey Johnson scored 10 while Avery Dilley had eight. With Forks holding a 43-8 lead at the half, a lot of the Spartans’ bench players were able to get in the game. He said the Spartans are going to need them to put in minutes especially if Gaydeski is out for any time.

Forks (3-0, 8-3) will play the winner of Cedar Park Christian and Mossyrock today, Mossyrock was the state 1B runner-up last season. The Spartans return to Pacific 2B League play Tuesday at Ocosta.
