OUTDOORS: Matt Schubert’s five best bets to do this weekend

■ PA blackmouth — For whatever reason, it appears the chinook have decided to set up shop out in front of Ediz Hook.

There’s hardly a time when one can count on anything during blackmouth season, so when that happens you ought to take advantage.

■ Photogenic — Nationally published ski photographer Jason Hummel will share the stories behind his pictures at a presentation Saturday in Port Angeles.

The Puget Sound native has shot and skied many of the state’s remote mountain destinations, including the Bailey Range in the Olympics and Mount Rainier.

His photos have been featured in Backcountry Magazine, The Ski Journal, National Geographic Traveler and other publications.

The presentation is set for 7 p.m. at BarN9ne, 229 W. First St., in Port Angeles. Admission is $5 at the door.

■ Halibut happening — Gear up for halibut season with a preseason primer at the Puget Sound Anglers-North Olympic Peninsula Chapter monthly meeting Thursday night in Sequim.

PSA State Board President Ron Garner will share his expert tips on technique, equipment, bait and everything else.

Those in attendance will also receive a special Halibut Helper 2011 guide complete with helpful tips on when, where and how to hook a flatty this season in Marine Area 6 (eastern Strait).

Halibut tackle will also be included in the evening raffle.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., and is open to the public.

■ Fly-tying seminar — Waters West Fly Fishing Outfitters will host a free fly-tying seminar at its Port Angeles shop, 140. W. Front St., on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Guest tier Sean Dahlquist will focus on various steelhead spey and dee flies at the seminar.

■ Powder pleasure — If Hurricane Ridge Road actually opens this weekend, skiers and snowboarders can expect a whole lot of fresh powder.

This might just be wishful thinking, given the weekend forecast.

Still, I’ll take that bet.
