Western Washington PGA Cedars at Dungeness Director of Golf Bill Shea left, presents the $5,000 first place prize to 2018 Senior Washington Open winner Rob Gibbons.

CONGRATULATIONS AND A hearty happy 15th anniversary to SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim. SkyRidge will celebrate the milestone with a two-person modified Chapman format SkyRidge Anniversary Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 16.

In a two-person modified Chapman, each player hits a tee shot and then hits their partner’s ball for the second shot. From there it becomes alternate shot, using the better of the two second shots. The player whose second shot was not used would hit the third shot and the team would continue alternating shots until the ball is holed.

Sounds like a drinking game with all these shots involved.

The tournament will open with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Entries are $80 per team ($40 per player) and will include 18 holes of golf, range balls, a tee prize, lunch following play, KP contests and a long putt contest.

A horse race contest also might follow after lunch.

An optional honey pot is $30 per team.

Team handicap will be 50 percent of the low handicap player and 30 percent of the high handicap player.

Cart rental is an additional $15 per seat.

Call SkyRidge at 360-683-3673 to get in on the fun.

Scoring clinic at Cedars

With two out of every three golf shots coming from 125-yards or closer, Cedars at Dungeness PGA Professionals Bill Shea and Garrett Smithson both believe the key to scoring well on the golf course is to learn the secrets of those approach shots.

The pair will offer a 90-minute Professional Short Game Clinic from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 13.

Students will receive expert short game instruction on chips, pitches, flops and more.

Every attendee also will receive a new Callaway wedge and a cocktail.

To register, call the pro shop at 360-683-6344.

Kids to the range

Discovery Bay Golf Course near Port Townsend is focusing on growing the game of golf among the age 18 and younger set this month by designating June as “Bring Your Kid to the Range Month.”

“For the entire month of June, children under the age of 18 will receive a free bucket of balls for the range when accompanied by a paying adult,” Discovery Bay head pro Jeff Kent said.

The free bucket kids will receive will be the same size or smaller than the paid adult bucket.

After players are warmed up on the range, they can take advantage of Discovery Bay’s two players and a cart for $69 weekly special running through June 10.

Kent said to mention the special to receive its benefits.

The course offers different specials each week. Those can be seen at www.discoverybaygolfcourse.com or by signing up for emails from the course.

“Our Thursday night league is a blast and going along nicely with the Volunteers holding down first place at the moment,” Kent said.

“There are still openings for the second half of league play if there are any teams or individuals out there that want to participate. Second half play starts July 5th, so still a month to work on your games.”

Kent can aid in that improvement with his weekly Tuesday afternoon golf clinics.

Clinics are $10 and held every Tuesday at 3 p.m. during the season.

Space is limited so please sign up in advance at 360-385-0704.

And Discovery Bay continues to offer a Players Club membership, which grants players 20 percent off golf fees for a year, for $125.

“The more you play the more you save,” Kent said.

Spring Shotgun

Peninsula Golf Club’s Mark Mitrovich and Gary Thorne teamed to repeat as low gross champions at the club’s annual Spring Shotgun Tournament held Memorial Day Weekend.

“I would like to thank you all for participating in the 2018 Spring Shotgun,” Peninsula head pro Chad Wagner said.

“We had a field of 126 players this year and I hope we only continue to grow this event. A big congratulations to Mark Mitrovich and Gary Thorne for low gross of the field, Brad Clarke & Doug Marshall for low net of the field (110), Rena Peabody and Dolly Burnett for low gross of the ladies (152) and Irene Schmidt and Cynthia Carpine, who won in a putt-off to take down low net.”

Senior Washington Open

Rob Gibbons of Arrowhead Golf Club in Mollala, Ore., finished at 12-under-par to win the 2018 Senior Washington Open held May 29-31 at Cedars at Dungeness. Gibbon’s shot a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to win the $5,000 first place prize by one stroke over Joey Carranza of Aldarra Golf Club.

Sequim’s Gary Kettel had the best finish of any area player participating. Kettel shot 6-over-par 222 to finish tied for 38th.

Peninsula’s Gary Thorne was one-shot back of Kettel.

Cedars at Dungeness has hosted this event for years but this was the first time director of golf Bill Shea was eligible to participate. Shea opened the tournament with a drive on the first tee and finished tied for 104th.
