GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim goes on the defensive in huge win over North Kitsap; Port Angeles wins and Chimacum gets past improving Port Townsend

POULSBO — The usually high-scoring Sequim girls relied on their defense to keep alive a shot at earning a share of the Olympic League 2A Division crown, giving up just eight points in the entire second half to beat North Kitsap 41-27 on the road.

Friday’s win was actually the lowest scoring output for Sequim all season, but it was also one of the Wolves’ best defensive performances of the year against a very good team.

“We played hard all four quarters and focused on our defense every possession,” said coach Linsay Rapelje. “North Kitsap is a great team, so I’m very proud of our girls for holding them to 27 points.”

It was the seventh straight win for the Sequim girls. The victory puts the Wolves in a tie for second place at 8-2 in the Olympic League 2A Division, one game behind first-place Port Angeles.

Sequim went into the half time break up just 21-19, but outscored the Vikings 20-8 in the second half to win decisively.

Jessica Dietzman led the Wolves with 14 points and six steals, while Jayla Julmist had nine points and 15 rebounds.

Sequim not only has a chance to finish second in the Olympic League 2A, the Wolves can actually tie for the league championship.

The Wolves (8-2, 13-4) next play at Olympic (4-6, 7-11) on Tuesday. If Sequim can win that game, the Wolves could be playing for a share of the league championship against Port Angeles (9-1, 15-3) at home at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. The first time the two teams played, the Roughriders won 59-50 in Port Angeles.

“The game got pretty physical at times and I was very pleased with how we handled that, maintaining our level of play and staying mentally and emotionally steady,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

The Trojans had just 21 points after three quarters Friday and scored nearly half their points in the fourth, when the game was out of hand.

“We played a variety of defense that kept Olympic from establishing much of an offensive rhythm much of the night,” Poindexter said.

The Roughriders made six 3-pointers with Mikkiah Brady and Bailee Larson shooting a combined 5 for 9 from beyond the arc.

Brady led a well-balanced attack with 13 points, while Madi Cooke had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and Eve Burke 11 points and eight rebounds. Larson had seven points and six assists.

PORT TOWNSEND — Maddie Dowling sank three 3-pointers during a pivotal 14-0 run as the Cowboys broke open a close game against the rival Redhawks.

“Maddie was enormous with those 3-pointers and that was amazing to see because coming off that ACL tear she hasn’t been able to be the Maddie she was in all ways before getting hurt,” Huntingford said of Friday’s game.

Huntingford said it was a classic rivalry game between the two teams.

“When you are going to play your rivals three times a year, you’re going to get to know each other really well and there will be a game where a team challenges you and this one was ours,” Huntingford said.

Huntingford said the Redhawks played tough defense, limiting Chimacum’s leading scorer Mia McNair to 6 points, nearly 14 off her season average.

“Town did a good job on defense, they played tight to Mia, they played tight to Grace [Yaley],” Huntingford said. “They were physical on us. They didn’t let us get through the key without bumping or redirecting us.”

Port Townsend closed to within two points in the third quarter, but Chimacum made some defensive changes, got some steals and scored in transition along with Dowling’s 3-point shooting, to go up as much as 18 in the fourth quarter.

Dowling had 13 points to lead Chimacum.

Jada Trafton scored eight for the Cowboys and Jadeah Nordberg had seven.

Port Townsend sophomore Gina Brown added 17 points.

The Redhawks (1-4, 4-11) host the North Mason JV on Tuesday.

Chimacum (5-0, 11-5) looks to finish the Olympic League 1A slate unbeaten with a home game against Klahowya on Tuesday.

LANGLEY — The Cowboys overcame foul trouble and some stagnant offense at times to beat the Falcons.

“At one point we had three starters sitting on the bench with foul trouble, and at a certain point I think it got in our heads and we got frustrated.

“We did a great job of moving ball the ball versus Vashon [on Monday], but we were having trouble with our passing,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said.

Mia McNair scored 28 points to lead the Cowboys after scoring 24 against Vashon on Monday.

“She’s averaging around 19.5 for the year and I don’t think anyone at Chimacum has ever averaged 20 points in a season,” Huntingford said.

McNair added five rebounds.

Jada Trafton scored 10 points with four assists and four steals for the Cowboys.

Clara Noble also had an impact on the game with four points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

“Clara is getting better every game on learning how to impact the game, especially with teams playing 2-3 zones against us.

“Our bench did a nice job of filling in with the foul trouble we were in.”

MONTESANO — The Spartans improved against the first-place Bulldogs from a meeting earlier this season, but they fell on the road Friday night.

Chloe Leverington led the Spartan’s with nine points, while Iesha Johnson had seven.

“We definitely had a better showing this time around,” said coach David Hurn. “We made it somewhat respectable. I was pleased with the progress.” That first game in early January was a 63-27 loss.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Spartans (1-5, 7-10) as they face Elma (5-1, 16-1), which has lost only one game all year, and that was to Montesano, at home at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in their final home game of the season.
