CROSS-COUNTRY: Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Sequim runners win at Bainbridge, Belfair meets

BAINBRIDGE — Area cross-country runners had a stellar day Wednesday at meets in Bainbridge and Belfair, with three individual winners and two team winners.

Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson won again at the Olympic League Meet at Battle Point Park, a race with 170 competitors from Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Olympic, Bremerton, Klahowya and North Kitsap.

Port Townsend’s Nathan Cantrell won the boys’ race for his second first-place finish of the year. The Port Angeles boys’ team, with six runners in the top 16, won the team competition.

Meanwhile, at a three-way meet in Belfair, the Sequim girls beat Kingston and North Mason. They were led by Riley Pyeatt, who came in first in the girls’ race.

Battle Point meet

Cantrell won the boys’ meet with a time of 16 minutes, 12.5 seconds by a gap of 30 seconds. That is the sixth-fastest 5K time among 1A boys in the entire state.

Port Angeles’ Adam Borde (17:19.10), Jack Gladfelter (17:19.30) and Thomas Shaw (17:27.40) finished fifth, sixth and seventh to lead the Roughriders to their team win. The Riders’ Naaman McGuffey finished ninth (17:42.80), Joshua Gavin 13th (17:54.50) and Langdon Larson 16th (18:25.60).

Port Angeles Coach Rodger Johnson said the Riders’ top trio stuck together through much of the race.

“The top three boys, Adam Borde, Jack Gladfelter, and Thomas Shaw ran together the whole race, starting out slow [for them] and building speed throughout the race to a strong sprint finish. It was a fast course, and lots of kids had PRs today including Borde, Gladfelter, Josh Gavin, Naaman McGuffey and Langdon Larson. The boys are getting faster every week, and are getting excited for the post season,” Johnson said.

For Port Townsend, Kincaid Gould made the top 10, finishing 10th (17:42.80), while Redhawks Silas DeWyse finished 18th (18:38.70) and Max Allworth-Miles (18:39.20) 19th.

The Port Angeles boys ended up with 40 team points, edging out Klahowya (44) to win the meet. Lower scores are better in cross country. Port Townsend came in third with 71 points.

For the girls, Larson, the No. 1 state ranked cross-country runner among 2A girls (by more than 20 seconds), won her fifth meet of the year with a time of 18 minutes, 53.40 seconds by a gap of 25 seconds over Alyssa Baker of Klahowya.

Larson’s teammate Kynzie DeLeon finished third (19:21.10) with the eighth-fastest 5K time among 2A girls in the state.

Port Townsend had a strong girls’ showing with Anika Avelino finishing fifth (21:11.50) and Rachel Matthes sixth (21:27.30). Matthes is actually a Chimacum student but runs cross country for the Port Townsend team.

The Riders’ Ella Holland finished in the top 10 with a ninth-place finish at 21:42.80.

The Riders ended up with six runners in the top 15. Kathryn Guttormsen was 13th (22:33.50), Emma Weaver 14th (22:56.50) and Jenna McGoff 15th (22:56.50).

“Powerhouses DeLeon, Ella Holland and Emma Weaver all ran their season best today,” Johnson said.

Despite the strong showing, the Port Angeles girls came in second to a very strong Klahowya cross-country girls’ team that had five runners in the top 12.

In fact, the Riders and the Eagles combined had 12 of the top 16 places and with Klahowya possibly jumping up to 2A next year, it could be an interesting new league rivalry brewing between these girls’ teams.

Klahowya tallied 37 points while Port Angeles had 40. Port Townsend was third with 83 points.

Sequim meet

BELFAIR — Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt won a three-way meet with Kingston and North Mason on Wednesday with a time of 19:52, a gap of more than 90 seconds over second place.

Pyeatt got a lot of help from some young freshman teammates as the Wolves’ girls won the meet as a team.

Sequim freshman Anastasia Updike came in fourth with a time of 23:10, while Macy Cogburn was seventh (24:34). Junior Jessica German was fifth (23:14) and senior Emily Silva was eighth (24:38).

The Sequim girls dominated with five girls in the top 10, tallying 25 points to North Mason’s 40 and Kingston’s 58.

For the boys, the Wolves’ top finish was by Eli Gish (18:33), while Kaleb Needoba was fifth (18:41), Koda Robinson sixth (18:53) and Jaxon Cogburn 10th (19:22).

The Sequim boys finished second with 37 team points. North Mason won with 28 points and Kingston was third with 55.
