BELLINGHAM — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team continued its season trend of keeping opponents off the scoreboard.
The Pirates have yet to allow a goal this season after defeating Whatcom 2-0 on the road to improve to 4-0 Northwest Athletic Conference play Friday.
The Peninsula men also moved to 4-0 by beating the Orcas 1-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.
The women’s game was a rematch of last year’s conference quarterfinals match won by the Pirates 2-1.
Manaia Siania-Unutoa became the third Peninsula goalkeeper to record a shutout, joining Kasie Lough with two and Emily Flinn with one.
Fronted by a stout defense, Siania-Unutoa only need to record one save.
Whatcom (1-1, 1-3) played the Pirates to a scoreless tie until Brittney Yoshimura’s corner kick set up a goal by Kai Mahuka.
Peninsula sophomore Larkyn Nelson, who play at Bellingham High School, scored in the 86th minute to push the advantage to 2-0.
The Pirates play their first home match Tuesday against NWAC West Region foe Tacoma (0-1, 1-4) at
2 p.m. at Wally Sigmar Field.
Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for seniors, veterans and 17 and younger. Those 12 and younger get in free.

Peninsula 1, Whatcom 0
The Pirates scored early and held on for a close win over the Orcas.
Defender Julio Soto continued to fill in admirably at goalkeeper, earning the shutout with five saves.
Eddie Benito scored the game’s only goal in the fourth minute. It was only the second goal Whatcom (0-1, 2-1) has allowed this season, which ties with the Pirates for second-least in the NWAC behind Clark, which has allowed one goa.
The Peninsula men will face Tacoma (1-0, 4-1) at
4 p.m.
Community reception
Peninsula College will host a preseason celebration Monday for the school’s soccer teams. The event, which will feature appetizers and nonalcoholic drinks, begins at 6 p.m. in the Pirate Union Building on the school’s main campus in Port Angeles.
The celebration will open with a salute and thank you to Pirate Athletic Association members and supporters. The public will then have an opportunity to meet and talk with the soccer coaches and players before the soccer program’s doubleheader home-opener Tuesday.
