BOYS BASKETBALL: Quilcene’s defense shuts down Crescent

QUILCENE — The Quilcene boys basketball team’s commitment to defense was on display in a 50-24 nonleague win over Crescent.

The Rangers held the Loggers to five first-half points for a 34-5 lead at halftime.

“Our press in the first half, they weren’t able to cope with it and we were able to open up the lead,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said of Monday’s game.

Thompson added that defense hasn’t been a strength for the Rangers (6-4) in recent years.

“We defend well. This year, the kids decided they are going to be good defenders,” he said.

“They decided they’re going to be good at defense and rebounding.”

Offensively, Triston Williams led Quilcene with 17 points. Nate Weller had 11 and Brandon Bessey added seven.

Despite trailing 34-5 at half, Crescent outscored the Rangers 19-16 in the second half, including 10-5 in the third quarter.

“They played better in the third and we didn’t play so well,” Thompson said.

“Give them credit, they came out in the third quarter and hustled and played well.”

Quilcene has eight days off before playing at SeaTac League foe Evergreen Lutheran on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

The Loggers, meanwhile, travel to play top-ranked Neah Bay on Friday, Jan. 9.
