ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Shelby Jones, Sequim softball

Shelby Jones

Sequim’s Shelby Jones came through in the clutch in a big way for the Wolves this past week, winning three games at the West Central District 2A softball tournament that the Wolves had to have to move on.

Jones first threw a five-hit one-run game against Fife in a 2-1 win, then after Sequim was beaten in the second round, Jones was huge in two straight “win or go home” games.

First, Jones pitched a shutout against River Ridge in an 8-0 win, then giving up just one run against Olympic as the Wolves won again 9-1, qualifying for the state 2A softball tournament in Selah.

In all, Jones pitched 23 innings at district, gave up six hits and no earned runs, and struck out 24 against six walks.

The Athlete of the Week is brought to you by the sports department at the Peninsula Daily News along with the sponsorship of Swain’s General Store, serving Clallam and Jefferson counties since 1957.
