PORT ANGELES — Workers found an old wooden water main Thursday while replacing a leaking section of a newer pipeline.
C & J Excavating employees discovered the wooden pipe, which they believed dates from the 1930s or ’40s, underneath Golf Course Road near the intersection of West Woodhaven Lane in Port Angeles.
Workers were installing a new 40-foot-long section of pipe to repair a leak in a more modern water main.
The workers guessed the new pipeline was probably installed in the 1960s.
Repair work began Monday and ended Thursday.
Glenn Cutler, Port Angeles city public works and utilities director, said four or five homes went without water while the repair was made.
The older water main was made from wood planks bound with steel bands.
