LAPUSH — Quileute tribal elders decided construction on the long-awaited senior center should continue with provisions to protect any additional Native American remains found during excavation of the site.
Construction was stopped two weeks ago following the discovery of human remains.
During a closed-door meeting Tuesday night, an archeological report regarding the discovery was presented to elders.
Tribal officials deferred decisions regarding continuing the project to elders and said about 30 people attended the meeting.
“The consensus of the elders was to proceed with care at the project’s current site,” said Audrey Grafstrom, executive director of the Quileute Housing Authority, on Wednesday.
Construction on the $775,000 center, located along Ocean Drive, could restart as early as next week and an archeologist will be on site during excavation.
