West End: Big waves expected at – LaPush Surf Frolic

LAPUSH — Surf’s up.

A winter storm and high tides are bringing bodacious waves to the North Olympic Coast.

And the 2003 LaPush Surf Frolic is expected to bring an estimated 100 brave sea kayakers and surfers to the Quileute reservation this weekend to enjoy the winter waves, the beach and local seafood.

“This has been an annual migration for more than 15 years,” said Karsten Boysen, information and education officer for the Quileute tribe.

“Some people have been coming here for more than 20 years. It’s stretched over a couple generations now.”

The fun gets under way today and wraps up Sunday.

Between 80 and 100 kayakers and surfers usually make the trip to First Beach for the three-day event, which Boysen describes as a gathering of souls rather than a competition.

The informal event has no judges or entry fees, he said.

For participants, the setting for this year’s event couldn’t be better.
