WEEKEND: Wearable Art Show moves to larger Port Townsend venue Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Wearable Art Show, a pageant of fashions made of just about everything from silk to videotape, has sold out a number of times in its five-year history.

So the event, previously held at the Port Townsend Elks Lodge, moved to a larger venue this year: McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden State Park, 200 Battery Way.

Still, one of the two shows is already sold out, co-coordinator Debbi Steele said.

The 2 p.m. matinee may have a few tickets available at the door, Steele added, but it’s Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. show that has the best availability.

Helps women, girls

Wearable Art Show tickets start at $30 via www.BrownPaperTickets.com and 800-838-3006, with proceeds to benefit the Jefferson County Fund for Women and Girls.

The fund, under the umbrella of the Jefferson Community Foundation, makes grants to local projects and agencies involving females across the age spectrum.

Twenty-five designers — including, for the first time, four men — have been chosen to participate in the event.

With their 35 works, they’re competing for Best in Show, People’s Choice, Best Student Work and Art You Can Really Wear awards, which bring cash prizes totaling $2,500.

Live video projection of the models, as they come onto the stage and make their way into the audience, will run throughout the show, said publicist Megan Claflin.

Then at intermission, patrons will have a chance to try on and purchase many of the items in the Art You Can Really Wear category.

The juror for this year’s show is artist Jean Cacicedo of Berkeley, Calif., while the selected designers include previous Best in Show and People’s Choice winners Galadriel Nichols, Paula “Pay la Renta” Lalish and Margie McDonald.

The field of competitors ranges in age from 12 to 79 and comes from across and beyond the North Olympic Peninsula.

Selected artists and teams include Jean Bartos; Judith Bird; Amy Dahlberg; Jodee Force; Nonie Gaines; Heather Gale; Diana Gipson; Tamara Halligan; Christine Jacobson; Karyn Lao; Kellen Lynch and Hanna Nicole, Margaret, Meredith and Walter Massey; Kelly Matlock; Teri Nomura; Gunther Reimaitz; Natalia Robinson; Rhutanna Locklear Ramirez; Janice Speck; Katya Taylor; Leslie Taylor and Lee Zuhars; Brandon Truscott; and Joyce Wilkerson.
