WEEKEND: PT Shorts goes nautical for Saturday’s reading

PORT TOWNSEND –– Tall tales of adventure at sea will be featured as Key City Public Theatre’s sets sail a selection of shorts Saturday.

Stories from renowned authors and sailors Steve Callahn, Wendy Hinman and Lin Pardey will be staged at 7:30 p.m. in the Pope Marine Building at the foot of the dock at Madison and Water streets.

The shorts session coincides with the city’s gallery walk.

A naval architect, inventor, sailor and author, Callahan is best known for his New York Times best-selling book Adrift: 76 Days Lost at Sea, in which he recounts the tale of his 11-week survival aboard a life raft on the Atlantic Ocean. He later served as the technical adviser on the movie “Life of Pi.”

Along with husband Garth Wilcox, Hinman spent seven years at sea, sailing 34,000 miles and visiting 19 countries aboard a 31-foot cutter.

Hinman wrote about the adventure in her book Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven-Year Pacific Odyssey. Before her voyage, Hinman taught sailing, raced and cruised extensively in the Pacific Northwest as well as in the Hawaiian Islands, Chesapeake Bay, San Diego, Greece and the Virgin Islands.

Pardey and her husband, Larry, are best-selling nautical authors, ocean sailors and boat builders who have written 11 books and released numerous instructional videos on offshore voyaging.

Each of them has sailed more than 200,000 miles and received some of sailing’s most prestigious awards. They make New Zealand their base but spend part of each year cruising on board their engine-free 29-foot sailboat Taleisin.
